On Friday TAG editors will be off to Italy for a family holiday. As we have been most places in Italy we thought we would try for somewhere undiscovered!
So we have a house and pool booked in Montalto delle Marche in the the Marche. I have been corrected on the prounonciation of the Marche area, one says Marké apparently.
When people ask where is the nearest big town I find it hard to answer, there does not appear to be one.. but there are lots of interesting looking villages.
We land in Rome, get the hire car, risk our life on the Rome peripherique then head into the Apennines. Our first night we have booked a hotel outside L'Aquila, it would appear L'Aquila suffered an earthquake about 5 years ago and has not been rebuilt, so the hotel is outside the town.
Then onto the coast near Saint Benedetto del Tronto, from there a drive of half an hour into the country, to find the rental property.
Quite an adventure with some wonderful scenery along the way we hope.
Well anyone can do Naples, Sorrento, Tuscany Umbria, etc... we will let you know if it is all worth the trip.
It is a bit exciting. If anyone has been please let us know... our maps from Amazon have not arrived yet.
Has anyone got a copy of Eric Newby's Love and War in the Apennines? It might be nice to reread at the moment.
We have French friends house sitting and two dogs who will be on guard whilst we are away. We are told by friends you would enter our coutyard at your peril when we are not at home. As the dogs are snarling at the gates I do not think we need a sign " beware of the dog"
