Palme d'Or at Cannes for British director

Ken Loach at 80 years shows no sign of slowing down. The veteran director is a perennial exhibitor in the Cannes Film Festival, having been selected to show in the official concours 13 times in the last 18 years, and was winner in 2006. Again this year his entry "I, Daniel Blake" has been rewarded with the Palme d'Or. A picture of Britain in 2016 when the eponymous Dan struggles to exert his rights having worked for 40 years until a heart condition forces him to quit - not good enough for the "job centre" which demands he look for work.
Loach is known for his championing the underdog, the less fortunate in our society and his implacable opposition to the establishment - but his stand point does not mean he doesn't make cinemas masterpieces.
