Whit Monday we used to call it. We remember the Whitsun Walks in Manchester when the two main Christian communities chose to walk to celebrate - though never on the same day. Nowadays it is not even a holiday. Here in France laique however, it is a jour férie unless you choose to work without pay as a gesture of solidarity with elderly and handicapped people. The canicule of 2003 caused many premature deaths so the government asked people to forego wages, though the charges levied would remain and contribute to a fund worth 3 billion euros.
If you are off work today there are plenty of Pentecost activities on offer, including an open day at Schipper garden centre, near La Fouillade and Najac.
