Three hens off to play

Seeing the hens together always reminds me of the French children's nursery rhyme (chantine) about
 hens.

Quand trois poules vont au champ                                             When 3 hens go out to play

La première va devant                                                                   The first one leads the way

La deuxième suit la première                                                       number 2 follows on so near

La troisième fait la dernière                                                         number 3 brings up the rear

La première va devant                                                                  the first one leads the way

translation not quite literal, but if you know the tune it just about fits. Better ideas welcome.
