Much is made of laicite being enshrined in the French constitution, with the separation of church and state. But given the recent controversy in the UK with David Cameron insisting that Britain is essentially Christian we have been struck by the amount of coverage being given to the canonisation of the two Popes, John XXIII and Jean-Paul II in the French media. Prime Minister Manuel Valls will be in Rome, much to the annoyance of the "laiques". And you can watch the whole ceremony live on France 2 TV from 9.30am tomorrow. Anglophone viewers will have to have SKY Arts 2. It seems that despite the best efforts of those "laiques" and militant atheists French people too are Christian (or Catholic at least) at heart.
