Maire denounces asylum policy

Brigitte Bareges, the maire (Les Republicains) of Montauban has written to the Prefect of Tarn & Garonne, Pierre Besnard, to demand more consultation on policies concerning asylum seekers. She claims that maires should asked to decide where and when those migrants who are seeking asylum should be housed and what security measures will be provided.
She cites the case of the Marseilles attack and a similar case in Montauban (though in that case there was no terrorist involvement). It is worth noting that in neither case was the perpetrator an asylum seeker, but a long term illegal immigrant from north Africa.
Our experience is that most maires simply say "not in my back yard", but the few who do provide a welcome find it a rewarding experience.
