Throughout the country, football fans (and even non-fans) were glued to their TVs, computers or mobile phones to watch France play Germany for a place in the final of Euro 2016. Here at Mas del Sol a dedicated group forsook the barbecue and party being held in the garden, even the piscine, to gather in front of our big screen. 45 minutes of tension, then the penalty in the last minute of the first half: 1-0 France. After a quick dash for food and beer a much happier bunch re-assembled to cheer on les bleus to their 2-0 victory. It was the first time the "bête noire" German team had been defeated in a championship match since 1958.
There was a surprisingly large number of empty beer bottles at the end of what was billed as a celebration of Eid, the Muslim festival to mark the end of Ramadan.
