Six teachers from a Gaillac college are faced with prosecution and disciplinary procedures for trying to save their blackboards. The school is undergoing renovation and in an earlier phase such items were consigned to the dechetterie.
They are accused of breaking into the school one Wednesday afternoon, but having given notice of their intentions were met by gendarmes. Homes were searched and allegedly other school items were found. All have now been interviewed by the regional rectorat, the body charged with educational standards. This will not necessarily lead to any sanction it is said. The school head had no comment to make, referring reporters to the rectorat.
The teachers and their supporters claim that they did nothing wrong; the school was not locked as claimed and they merely wanted to save a teaching aid which is invaluable in some classes.
