On the eve of the Rugby World Cup, the French basketball team were beaten in the semi-final of the European Championships of Basket, as the French call the sport. This was a disappointment as the French basketmen were the reigning champions and were playing on home ground. The tournament has been held in Lille, at the new stadium Pierre Mauroy, where packed houses have followed their progress.
The Rugby version kicks off tonight (Friday 18th), with England v Fiji and France open their campaign tomorrow against Italy.
