The Champs Elysees saw the end of the Tour yesterday with Chris Froome becoming the first British rider to win the race twice. Not only the overall winner, but also the King of the Mountains title as best climber.
French media have not been universally generous in the face of yet another British win, constantly hinting that Froome is "too good to be clean". One cannot help thinking that no French winner in 30 years colours their view a little (though we may be equally prejudiced). It is sad that this great event has been mired in drugs controversy for so many years. But it is such a feat of endurance that it is unsurprising that many riders - and their team managers - feel the need of drugs to keep going, let alone help them to win. The Lance Armstrong legacy will live for a long time yet.
