Since 2004 Whit Monday (Pentecote) has been a day for "solidarity" when people are asked to work free and donate the salary to a fund (set up by the government) to help old and infirm people - those who suffered most from the great heatwave (canicule) of 2003. Naturally it being a jour ferié schools, post offices and other public buildings will be closed, but those commerces normally open on a Monday - not too many - will be open.
Whatever I earn today will be donated to the aged and infirm - ie Malc.
