Doreen's memories of the 50th anniversary

Hi Val
On the 50th anniversary of D Day I was working for the MOD and flew to Normandy by Hercules to report on it and help with the Press arrangements. I will never forget being at Pegasus Bridge on the exact 50th anniversary of D Day and being at the ceremonies at Arromanches and the various war cemeteries. Of course, there were more veterans then and they were younger, so there were marches through the villages they had helped liberate. As they marched through the local people cheered and gave them gifts.

The downside was that the MOD hadn't booked us accommodation in time so we had to stay in tents in the grounds of a sports centre in Caen. And it rained. But we were next to the Naafi tent so had unlimited supplies of wine!
