Only in France

Hi Val,

You may have seen this already:

A CRIMINAL has lost his driving licence after his car was involved in a series of traffic offences in the Hérault - despite the fact he was behind bars when the tickets were issues.

The criminal was jailed in 2013 after a cache of weapons and drugs were found in the powerful BMW he owned.

His car was seized and has since been used by officers in the Regional Judicial Police Service. They have racked up numerous speeding offences in the vehicle as its owner languished in prison in Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone.

Since 2011, police, customs and gendarmerie have been able to use seized vehicles once related court proceedings have concluded and there is no reason to keep them in storage - but those vehicles remain registered to their original owner.

If the car is damaged, the owner can receive compensation on their release from prison - but there is nothing in the law that concerns traffic violations, according to Midi Libre.

The convicted man's lawyer has contested the tickets - and the loss of his client's driving licence.
