Over a dinner table last night (lovely dinner thanks Ruth and Colin) one subject of conversation was inevitably the effects of Monday's storm. The number of trees damaged seems to have been significant and two of the guests had been trying to clear away a fallen oak, realising that it is rather hard work (for those of us of a certain age).
But is also dangerous work as a man of 81 found to his cost in the commune of Genebrieres, near Montauban. Trying to cut off a heavy branch, it fell and killed him.
We imagine that he was one of those men who are used to doing things for themselves and wouldn't hesitate to get out the chain saw to clear debris away. But tree surgeons are trained and insured and often getting a professional in is the wisest course.
