Your doctor is likely to be a woman - or retired

The number of GPs is falling gradually in France. There are more than 90000 GPs, though increasingly fewer in some parts of France (especially around Paris) and more than 80000 specialists, up by 6% since 2007. It also seems that many more retired doctors are continuing to work now that "retraite/emploi" status is allowed, up 18% in 2013 - though certain doctors we know are still active because there is no-one to take over.
The number of women doctors is also steadily rising, now 44%, up 6% since 2007 and more than 55% of medical students are women. So don't be surprised if your doctor is actually a retired woman specialist.
By comparison the UK has about 60000 GPs and 80000 specialists. 49% of GPs are women. There has been some debate on how useful the "feminisation" of medicine has been as women (allegedly) work part-time, shun the more arduous disciplines and un-social hours thus costing the country more by having to train more doctors (at a cost of £500k each) than necessary. And all because girls achieve better A levels!
