Why do mosquitoes bite some and not others

Following a discussion last night where a chosen group of visitors ( ours) were discussing why some had been bitten and others had not, the answer was on English TV this morning. It is all down to smell, they like the way you smell or they don't. The bigger you are and the more they like your smell, the more you might be bitten as there is more flesh available to them. The only answer at the moment to repel them is to cover your skin with insect repellant.
Malc never gets bitten so we  have been joking he must give off a rotten pong, if we could bottle his particular smell and then spray ourselves with "essence of Malc" would that see off these biting pests.
Apparently scientists are looking at very similar ideas.
