Has anyone else had this problem?

Has anyone encountered this problem with their UK bank?  I live permanently in France and have a Halifax UK bank account. After not receiving a cheque book automatically, I telephoned Halifax to be told they no longer send cheque books abroad. I would have to collect one at my local branch. I happened to be going to the UK and wrote to my local branch in Essex. I arrived at the branch to be told they no longer receive cheque books or credit cards at branches. On my return to France, I telephoned Halifax and was informed, if I live abroad, cheque books and credit cards will have to be posted to a third party and then sent on to me, and I can contact the ombudsman if I am unhappy with this policy.

Val says  The problem is banks in England do not want us to use cheques, too time consuming and costly for them. One wonders though about the customer service a bank is giving to put Martin through all that. Why not explain from the very start exactly what the position was. One despairs of poor service .
