bye the way I was somewhat mystified as to the size/age of the refugees as you refer to them as
Val says at my age young men are boys and it is an affectionate term... but I agree totally with Rowena about the colonial use of boy. Boys are often servants in Africa and India, I remember that from an Unle living in what was at that time Rhodesia.
I had been out with the lads all morning and brought 4 of them back for lunch. The lads were all from Soudan and all speak English at various levels. Malc told us about the post from Rowena ( have I had chance on my ipad today?)We discussed it and the lads in unison said they did not mind. They asked if I minded Mammie?
Whatever anything that smacks of master and slave will not be used by me so from now on they will be " the lads" a great Northern term or the young men.
