French justice minister Christiane Taubira, who is black, has been subjected to three racial attacks in recent
weeks. The first occurred when a far-right Front national mayoral candidate likened Miss Taubira to a monkey,
and later said she would “rather see her in the trees than in the government”. The second came when a group of
children, some as young as 10, waved banana skins at the minister when she visited the city of Angers in
western France. Now the extreme-right weekly magazine Minute has published a front cover parading a
racist slur against the minister.
