Some good news

Many readers have enjoyed the concerts of the Maitrise du Conservatoire de Toulouse led by Mark Opstad and like us were horrified at the threat posed to the pupils by a re-organisation of education in Toulouse.
Like us you signed the petition and read the stories of former and current students on a Facebook page we shared.
Now it looks as if the threat has been lifted and we received this message from Mark this morning:

Dear friends and colleagues,

In December I wrote to you asking you to support the Maîtrise de Toulouse in our battle to prevent the closure of the choir school based within the Toulouse Conservatoire.

We learnt today that the Education Department is abandoning this closure.

Thank you so much to all of you who supported us by signing the petition and writing comments.  The petition was signed by over 6000 people.  Our cause was strengthened by high profile interventions, notably on France Musique.

We have to remain vigilant, as the Education Department still wants to renegotiate their contract with the conservatoire, including aspects such as the number of hours our choristers can rehearse, but we hope we can win that fight too!

Whilst it has been a very difficult period, it was also very heartening to receive so much support.

Many thanks again.

Best wishes

Mark
