There is only one story in the media this morning - the rise of the Front national in Midi Pyrenees. But the results are not uniform over the old region, where Tarn and Garonne was the jewel in the FN crown, but Aveyron remained solidly Sarkozy and Haute Garonne (Toulouse) was still left leaning.
In T&G the stronghold was Castelsarrasin where the FN took almost 40% of the vote and Montauban had almost 30%..
The second round next Sunday is not so simple as you might think. The list winning most votes will take 25% of the seats, with the rest being divided pro rata to all other lists obtaining more than 10% of the votes. So during the next seven days there will be some frantic lobbying amongst the runner-up lists to try and leap frog the FN and persuade the nearly 50% who did not vote to do so next Sunday.
