Guidance on the St. Antonin list

Hi Val

Could you give me some guidance please ref the St Antonin lists. I take it that M. Aliot was the FN candidate, on 29per cent of those who voted? Was he the only FN candidate? Does only one person go forward to represent the town on the regional council after round two or a small group?

Yours in despair.

David

Malc says: It's confusing, but each party has a list of candidates in the region, so Aliot is head of the FN list for the new Conseil Regional, combining the two old regions of Languedoc Roussillon and Midi Pyrenees. Each party or group of parties will present a list in each Department, which is entitled to seats in proportion to its population.
Aliot himself was not a candidate in T&G (nor St Antonin) but there were people on his list standing and they received 30% of the vote. Only parties with over 10% of the vote may progress to a second round (provided that no party received over 50% on the first round, when no second round will be held - though that has not happened anywhere).  People on lists with at least 5% of the votes may join other lists for the second round - hence there may be some amalgamations of lists for round 2.
After the second round next Sunday any list having over 50% of the vote will receive 25% of the Regional Council seats, plus a percentage of the remaining seats prorata to the votes cast.

Let's say that the result is FN 51%, PS 35%, LR 14% and there are (say) 100 seats, then the FN will have 25+38 (51% of 75) = 63 seats, the PS 26 seats (35% of 75) and LR 11 seats (14% of 75).
If the PS or LR want to restrict FN power it will be essential to keep them below 50% on the second round. If the PS can persuade the smaller left, green and radical parties to switch allegiance to them they should be able to beat the FN into second place, but it will still be a powerful force.
The councillors elected will be drawn from the lists in strict order of the percentages received and of their position on the list. So it is quite possible that T&G will have at least 1 FN councillor to represent us.
Still confused? I am!
