The famous 13th brigade of the French Foreign Legion was founded in 1940 in Sidi-Bel Abbes (Algeria) and became the nucleus for de Gaulle's Free French troops and was based in Djbouti for nearly 50 years, moving to the Gulf in 2011. From next year 450 legionnaires will be based at Larzac, near Millau, rising to 1000 over the next few years.
The site was notorious in the 70's when a plan to expand the camp was opposed vehemently by local farmers, including Jose Bove, who managed to obtain 100 year leases with the camp confined to its 3000 hectares. Current occupants stationed there are infantry who will be re-deployed to allow the Legion to occupy the land.
