Is likely to be treated with pesticides, with French apples topping the list. A study by Greenpeace of apple growing areas including Midi Pyrenees (Tarn et Garonne is one of the biggest producers of fruit in the country) found up to 13 chemicals present in the orchards producing apples, especially those for sale in supermarkets.
According to Greenpeace up to 70% of the treatments could present health dangers. Government figures suggest that 66% of fruits, especially apples, have traces of chemicals.
Producers say that Greenpeace is exaggerating the risks to frighten consumers and say that organic production would lead to more expensive fruit and less attractive produce.
