Mai (or maypoles)

I was told sometime ago, (and I can't remember by whom) that they date from the French Revolution, when having elected representatives was something new, and that they were called Arbres de Liberté.  You do still see some around that actually are trees, with the branches lopped off except for a tuft at the top.
