I see fields of blue..

Motorists (cyclists too I imagine) will have noticed fields planted with beautiful blue flowers around Cordes and other local villages. Gardeners will say "flax of course", but have you wondered why flax has become so popular with farmers?
Naturally it is economics: the seeds produce linseed oil and with treatment can be used for animal feed and at 500 euros a tonne it is three times the price of wheat and twice the price of rape seed. The variety is not the same as that used to make linen and almost all the flax grown locally is used for cattle feed. But blue fields are so much nicer than the smelly yellow rape.
