Unusual behaviour from the donkeys

Hi ValI have just seen your question about the donkeys. I would say that it is normal for castrated donkeys to be "interested" in jenneys but to have a full erection & attempt intromission is unusual. It is possible that they were castrated after they reached puberty & that they are operating on "memories" rather than testosterone. However it is also possible (but very unlikely) that they were not castrated properly & still have some testicular tissue secreting male hormones. Did your farrier palpate their inguinal region to see if he could feel any "lumps" in what is left of their scrotum?

If they get pregnant they will stop coming into oestrus (season.) If they carry on cycling then they are very unlikely to be pregnant. Bear in mind though that equids usually stop cycling in winter anyway. Gestation in the donkey averages 12m with a range of 11m to 14m.
I hope that helps!

Val says I asked Peter the vet for his opinion on my donkeys as everyone I met in Simply whilst out shopping mentioned the donkeys and being " well hung like a donkey" did come up at a Fifi meeting apparently and most people think we will be expecting babies!
Not only that but Deirdre who found the perfect place for the African fertility goddess ( her interpretation of the statue) is convinced that the African lady  has affected the donkeys and is now hoping that the longed for Grandchildren may appear  (now she and Greg are in possession )
If it works, the 5 euros spent on that raffle ticket will be worthwhile and I  bet Deirdre
will be able to pass "our lady of fertility" on to other  needy would be grandparents in the area. She could be rented out to raise money for Africa.
