Smacking Children

Dear Val,
It is difficult to give an opinion as all situations are different. Now, I don't have children (fortunately), but I do have a dog and I would not smack a dog. The simple reason being that you should not use the same hand for reward and punishment as it confuses the animal. For my dog I reward good behaviour and ignore bad.  The question is, if a child is misbehaving and will not stop, what can you do?

Personally, I see nothing wrong with a short sharp smack on the leg to shock the child out its current behaviour. I remember when I was a child I was being punched in the arm by another child and I asked her repeatedly to stop. She would not stop so I smacked her in the face, which worked but I was had up in front of the headmaster and told off. I took very little notice of what he said because in my mind, I had done all I could to get the child to stop and made the only remaining logical choice.
