We had not been in France that long but we did have the two dogs Bonny and the cheeky westie Daisy so it must have been about 3 years after we arrived. The dogs when tiny had got into the game that as soon as the big gates opened they dashed out. We had the lovely old chateau on one side and an old school house on the other. The school house was quite run down even though owned by the Mairie and the large family of slightly mentally handicapped people paid rent to the Mairie. In the summer we realised by the whiffs that their fosse was not working, the smell compounded by our dogs who loved to go and roll in the effluent around the back of their house and ended up smelling like well... not roses. The simple family would not ask the Mayor to replace the fosse as they were worried the rent may go up. One day the dogs had rolled in this when I met the Mayor in the street,. all I could get out was our neighbours had a problem with their fosse. The Mayor tutt tutted and said " pas grave" and said it was just they did not use the products they should. I said " Monsieur Le Maire il y a une rivière de merde derriere la maison de notre voisin." He did looked quite shocked ! I think I also added it was a health risk and there had been a lot in the papers about getting one's fosse up to the norm.
Do you know within a couple of months their fosse was replaced and without their rent being raised.
