The former Budget minister Jerome Cahuzac was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and 5 years for fiscal fraud. The former maire of Villeneuve sur Lot was convicted of failing to declare accounts held in Switzerland.
The prosecution argued for a longer sentence on the grounds that "white collar" crime rarely ends up with a custodial sentence whereas common law criminals are much more likely to end up behind bars.
