Improvements ordered to the "Jungle"

Medecins du Monde and Secours Catholique, two NGO's working in the Calais refugee camp asked the court in Lille to order the Departmental and communal authorities to improve conditions in the camp. 10 extra water points, each with 5 taps, 50 latrines and access for emergency services and rubbish collection have been considered by the court to be the minimum needed to provide the refugees with conditions commensurate with their human rights.
The court put a time limit of 8 days for the legal notices to be placed and the work to be commenced. Other demands by the charities which would have imposed onerous costs on the authorities (such as identifying and providing care and shelter for children) were refused by the court. A spokesman for Secours Catholique said they were disappointed that the court did not go further, but said "it is a start".
We will soon have first hand reports from Sid and Laura and co. to see how things are going.
