We remember that traditionally dancers around a maypole will weave coloured ribbons around the pole into an intricate pattern, but did you know that the blue, red, white poles we see to "honneur nos elus" are called "mai". The tradition of erecting these poles in the gardens of newly elected local maires and councillors is not very common nowadays, but you do still see them about. I wonder where the name originated (without bothering to google it). One also cannot imagine such an edifice lasting too long in most UK towns..
