Mayday is the only day in the year when there is no public transport in most French cities. So if you plan a trip to Toulouse there will probably be no trains and certainly no metro or buses. The day is to mark "la fete du travail" and will be marked by parades in most big cities organised by trades unions and left wing parties. If you have a Mayday trip to Paris, the Metro will be running, but there are two parades, one the traditional workers march the other more controversially organised by the Front National, so perhaps it is best to avoid the underground.
Helpfully several cities remind the public that their "velib" (free bicycles) are in service today.
bonne fete.
