Thanks to those readers who are saying sorry to hear about the " cowboy" joiner. It was a few years ago now and the horror is practically erased from the psyche. Others have asked did we get references beforehand, and yes we did. Sadly the French who recommended him were not very reliable themselves and the people the joiner told us to ask about his work were obviously his friends. I am sure lots of you have happy stories but we do hear an awful lot of horror stories around building and builders but I am sure it happens in England as well. Although the law here seems to favour the French artisan. We realised quite early on that the joiner was a " bad un " but we were tied in to a contract which was impossible to get out of with out paying him. Just to lighten things every time he was not on site when he had promised he would be, the reason was always a death in the family. In fact one time I actually said, " No, no, your Father died six months ago" He smiled.
