Good day Val!
OK, I exaggerated a little about how much I mow. Our property at Lake Ainslie in Cape Breton,, Nova Scotia is around 110 acres of marginal farmland and woodlot with large areas of swampy wetlands. It is a very good habitat for many bird species, deer, moose, bear, coyote, otter, and beaver. We also have several acres that are home to one of the largest areas of showy lady slipper orchids in the province. We are looking into protecting them with a conservation easement supervised by the Nova Scotia Nature Trust.
I do mow about 4 acres around the house with a riding mower and keep under control about 30 acres of abandoned fields and trails on other areas with a tractor and bush hog.
Maggie keeps several kayaks and a wind surfing outfit at our beach on the lake. We have roughly 1/2 mile frontage on the lake and a brook that has breeding populations of brook trout, suckers, and sticklebacks. Beaver have created networks of ponds up the brook that are home to many ringneck, black, and green wing teal ducks. Bald eagles hunt all around the lake and there is a breeding pair we watch on a nest 400 yards from our kitchen window.
Maggie does several large gardens full of veggies and flowers. Once we return, I will send lots of pictures and tell more about our time in Nova Scotia.
