Montauban blocked by agriculteurs

Over 1000 farmers caused traffic jams on the A62 yesterday and throughout the Montauban city centre on Wednesday (24th January). This is part of the continuing protests against reducing the number of communes covered by subsidies for farming in environmentally difficult areas. Said to be worth up to 6000 euros per annum many claim they would need to cease farming if the zones are restructured.
The protests have been taking place throughout Occitanie and there were over 100 Lotois present to support their Tarn and Garonne colleagues. After a meeting with the prefect Pierre Besnard the leaders of the demonstrators claimed that over 90% of the communes in such zones in T&G would not be affected.
