beautiful handmade hardwood beds.
There is a very special workshop nestled in the
hills quite near to St Antonin Noble Val where creative minds and skillful
hands are creating remarkable pieces of furniture. The Big Bed Furniture
Company strive to make each piece unique by favouring the use of traditional
joinery techniques, many of which hail from structural timberframing.
The furniture makers at Big Bed do indeed make
big beds of style and quality, difficult to find in retail outlets and their
specific interest is in answering the individual requirements that clients have
for beds of a particular dimension.
“Sometimes we are asked to create beds that are higher, or lower, than
standard and sometimes a tall and exasperated client with cold feet comes to us
with a request for a bed that is extra long.”
Big Bed make beds in all the standard British
sizes, from singles all the way up to super kings. Their standard superking
will accept either a superking sized mattress or, for clients with varying
needs, two single mattresses of different firmness. They offer head and
footboards in different styles and various heights. They have also designed a
beautiful four poster, in all the above sizes.
At Big Bed, they are proud to call their beds big because they are so
well constructed and robust, tailor made and built traditionally to last and
last. “Our goal, and our pleasure, is to make that very particular bed that
you’ve been wanting but haven’t been able to find, yet.”
Big Bed also make under bed wheeled storage
boxes as well as blanket and linen boxes, all to individual specification.
Their blanket boxes can also be integrated into the footboard of the bed.
Designed especially for gites, or for the varying
requirements of family visits, Big Bed have created a superking that can easily
be split into two attractive singles and in response to the challenges of a
French summer, have designed a lightweight mosquito net frame that can be
mounted easily on to any of their beds. This comes complete with tailored mosquito
netting.
Beds aren’t the only things that come out of
the workshop though, they also make individually designed babies’ cots that
transform into stylish two-seater plantation style sofas when they have been
outgrown.
