We saw our Notaire last week, half expecting the same reception as the gentleman you quote, and were told it's completely possible now to put in your French Will a sentence to day that you want English, Scottish, etc. law to apply to your estate in France. We were given new wordings on the spot and, allowing for one thing we need to check, we'll have the new clause in place this week. Our Notaire recommended that we kept the Wills extremely simple, dealing with bequests privately, and stressed that when one of us dies no outside French authority will be involved and the survivor will simply go along to the Notaire's office with a list of the deceased's assets, and things will progress from there - working out any tax due, transfering belongings goods into the survivor's name, etc.
