In Rodez in Aveyron the mercury dipped as low as -3.1C - the lowest since 1975 and a similar temperature of -3C was recorded in Bergerac in the Dordogne.
The chilly weather saw the first snow falls of the season in Burgundy and the Auvergne and in Meribel ski resort the locals were celebrating the arrival of snow.
