The first truffle fair of the season at Lalbenque (Lot) on Tuesday saw prices considerably down on previous years. At around 350 euros the kilo the trufficulteurs are saying this low price reflects the quality of the early crop. This is presumably the result of the mild autumn weather and they are confident that quality, and prices, will improve as the winter goes on.
The usual ritual of small gingham covered baskets of the sellers lined up and clients gently inspecting and sniffing the precious fungus attracts as many tourists as serious buyers. There are "private" sellers as well as professional and these latter generally issue dire warnings about fake or cheaper foreign imports, so perhaps it pays to stick to someone you know.
