The night Fifi became truly International

Well girls, what a night.
Judith Reynolds key organiser of  the Fifi Christmas Carol Concert held at Verfeil Sur Seye  deserves a "medaille d'or" Last year the first of these events was very good but lacked the international feel, well this year  that was put right. We had the children of Verfeil singing " Jingle bells",  a number of  village children being taught English by a group of dedicated ladies, all wanting to offer their services to the local community and the children are loving it. The choir of St. Antonin ... and Caylus sang French Carols, Fifi ladies sang English and there were readings in French and English. The  residents of the village of Verfeil had a reminder  from the Mairie that very morning and the village turned out, " nombreux". Mulled wine and mince pies were plentiful and there was not a " mouse pie" in sight. I am sure everyone had the same feeling that in such a warm ambience celebrating the coming of Christmas could not have been better

5 of us are planning to jump through hoops in 2013

Long time residents here ( must be more than 5 years ) are planning on taking the roller coaster ride in 2013 to gain dual- nationality. Why would we bother I can hear you ask?  Not sure about the others but I want a vote somewhere. I want my voice to be heard from a tick on a ballot paper. Lots of women fought for me to be able to have that right, so I do not want to let all their trials and tribulations go to waste. Before long I will not be able to vote in England and as we live here full time, it is what is happening here that matters. The more I see of the rise of Marine Le Pen the more I want to say " No, I do not agree with racist views" and I want at least to be able to cast a more moderate vote.
It is not going to be easy but we are all keen to give it a try and as long as we can keep our English nationality ( fall back position ) then we are keen to go ahead. If you are interested in knowing more contact us, but we will keep you informed in TAG at each step.

Catfish catch and kill pigeons in Albi

Huge catfish  (called  les silures in French )  in the Tarn at Albi have been filmed catching and eating pigeons by the waters edge. Introduced into France in the 1970's, these fish can grow to huge proportions.  Not suprising if they are stuffing in  pigeons, they will be eating thrushes and ortolans next.
Can you remember the " Silurians" in Dr.Who?

Light pollution in them there hills.

Our situation at Mas del Sol  is a bit " lost in France "ish" high on a hill in beautiful open countryside looking over to other hills. At night the stars are so clear I am sure coming up to Christmas we could see the star of Bethlehem. ( if it was there ) What other adornments are needed for  Christmas. French neighbours over the hill , who do not get me wrong are delightful, just misguided, have decked the house and barns with flashing Christmas lights, why? Hardly anybody goes up their road, probably we are the only ones who can see them in the distance.  We did go out initially to laugh when the donkeys started hee hawing and the dogs barking. We were pleased when the lights on the Chateau were turned off in Varen after the summer, only to be replaced with flashing Christmas horrors. Friends John and Jan have a farm house on the road below and I know in England they will be reading this, shaking their heads, being haters of light pollution.
Light pollution is one of the fastest growing most pervasive forms of enviromental pollution. It disrupts biological rhythms in humans and animals, particularly affecting nocturnal species.

Is the collective term for a group of sangliers " une horde"

Une horde de sangliers caused two accidents and havoc on the road from Albi to Toulouse near Lisle sur Tarn.  A horde, a group, a herd  anyway running across the motorway must have caused panic all round.

Why are the agriculteurs of Midi Pyrenees "en colere"

In Midi Pyrenees and Aquitaine the level of nitrates on the land and in rivers is so high the farmers are being asked to find other solutions for getting rid of their fumier, well their animals fumier / manure. The farmers say the new regulations will put them out of business and a map of the problem areas includes Midi Pyrenees and Aquitaine.  That is why today 50 tractors will be found on the streets of Toulouse and blocking roads today.

Warning about traffic on the "peripherique Toulousain"

Friday is not the day to choose to go to Toulouse for your Christmas shopping spree. Massive hold ups ( grosses perturbations)  are being forecast on the Toulouse peripherique, due to" manifestations of agriculteurs"   They're  planning on taking their tractors and driving in to the centre of Toulouse to make their protests. Something the average shopper can do with out.

Use the comments and do not have thrush dinners.

Hi Val - was going to comment properly on the blog - but got to that damn
wiggly thing and abandoned the project.
What I was going to say is that people who are concerned about the catching
and eating of thrushes and buntings might want to consider joining the LPO -
the League pour la Protection des Oiseaux. It's the sister organisation of
the RSPB, and it fights for changes in the law (and the enforcement of
existing laws) for the protection of wild birds and other wildlife. The
Tarn branch is very active, and organises bird-y outings and meetings. If
you join the national organisation you get lots of information and a
subscription to their beautifully produced and very informative and
interesting magazine. AND you know you're contributing to the end of
ortolan eating!
Jill Spearman

Val says So you do not have to contend with that 'damned wiggly thing'. I have
made it very simple

This appears on every post you may wish to reply to and as it is an active link, all you need to do is click it and the page to write your message appears. I type it on to every post and then make it link so please use it folks. and I have done away with the other comment [ with the wiggly thing ]
jill is quite right about joining the LPO, if it gives people power to stop
ortolan and thrush dinners I am all for it.

He keeps creeping in, that Malcolm

Knowing how you feel about things like this just wanted to let you know that your email address is now titled with Malc's name.  It might be intentional ( never ) and it is always lovely to see Malc in print!!
Hope to see you Saturday evening for the singalong!
Love Kathleen xx
Val says  Just realised  what you  mean Kath, so have altered it back to mail ( tout de suite)

Someone likes it!

I'd like to propose a vote of thanks to Val [ and Malcolm in the background] for such informative and entertaining posts, which I love catching up with, especially when I am away from our French home. So thanks Val, and keep going please!

Val says.  I am so glad you enjoy TAG Diana. I really enjoy co-ordinating it and hope not everyone groans when another TAG ''look now'' pops up on the  computer. For those people, and hard to believe they may be out there, do not bother reading every time [ but who knows what you will miss] For the many others who seem to like it, please keep contributing and letting me know what needs reporting.
Happy Christmas Diana and Anthony.

Out walking at dusk, wear reflective clothes

Yesterday on  the bridge at Feneyrols,  a young girl of 18 was walking over the bridge when she was knocked over by a car. The driver had not seen her in the dusk at 18hrs. Both driver and injured girl were from Feneyrols. The girl was " grievement blessee" with fractues to her pelvis and skull. Out walking the dog or just having a walk along the road you MUST wear some reflective clothing. This has been brought to TAGs notice on an earlier occasion, with a lady asking if I could  make a plea for readers to wear at least an arm band, hat or jacket.

Take five, and remember a legend.

Jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck has  suffered a heart attack and died at 92. An American known as ''a living legend'' by the US Library of Congress and so highly thought of in France was  honoured and made an ''Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters'' in 1990
Tudor Powell says  Have been a follower of Mr Brubeck since my National Service days in The Army on the Rhine at RAF Laarbruch. I was at his concert in the Free trade Hall in Manchester, part of his first UK tour.1957ish.
