Now that's a "camping car"!
Ten years ago a young Aveyronnais was inspired by passing travellers to spend a year in a "gypsy" caravan - here called a roulotte Irlandaise. On his return he decided that so relaxing and different was that mode of transport that he would start to manufacture them himself. Pierre Jacquot set about making the caravans from scratch and to measure. Each one takes about 4 months to make and sells from 15000 - 50000 euros depending on the spec.
All you need is a good heavy horse to pull it, not supplied by Pierre.

Last opera direct of the season
Opera lovers who regularly attend local cinemas for productions beamed live from New York's famous Metropolitan Opera House. Saturday sees the last of the season when Renee Fleming sings her trademark role as the Marechal in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" (Le Chevalier a la Rose). Saturday 13th May, 18h30 at various local cinemas, including Imagin Cinema, Gaillac.

Long live our local old French agriculteurs
Malc is still not well so tonight Shaban and I went to pick up some wood we had ordered for the wood burning stove in the gite.
Our old farmer neighbour has loads of big old machinery. Shaban who is a mechanic loves old machinery. As were we were chucking logs into the trailer, he spotted a threshing machine with a huge engine, he asked if he could climb the steps up to look at the engine and then took photos.
The old farmer was delighted and said in French of course,
"I have only two daughters and they are taken but if I had a third she would be yours and you could take this place over, an agriculteur needs to be a mechanic"
It really had me smiling and it was such a lovely thing to say, this particular man knows about the refugees in our area.
He is an old, French man who has probably never been very far from home but he knows about kindness and is a true humanitarian.

I know I have a reputation for blasting off verbally when dogs are put up for adoption when owners go back to the UK but sometimes shite happens and people find themselves in a ghastly situation. This has happened to Rio’s owners, lovely people who are totally distraught that they have to rehome Rio and go back to the UK. This really is a different story from “oh our lives have changed so we are leaving and tough cookie for the dog”. Regulars to the website will know that Brittany Spaniels are my very favourites and I would just love for someone to fall in love with this guy. He is five years old, is fine with other dogs but a rascal with cats. He is also blind in one eye but can see perfectly out of the other. As the owner of a one eyed dog I can confirm this makes no difference to the dog’s life. Poorpaws will pay for him to be neutered and his paperwork brought up to date. There will be no adoption fee for Rio.

Beware the "Saints de Glace"
The three days of 11,12 and 13 May are popularly known as the Saints de Glace, traditionally the last risks of frost. St Mamert, St Pancrace and St Servais (French names) always have their saint's day on these dates and often there are colder interludes. This year the Meteo expects no frost (certainly in our part of France), but it does look like it will be wet and mild - indeed storms are not unlikely.
Of course professional weather forecasters point out that it is not definite that there will be no frost below 500 metres, but there has been no frost recorded in the last 7 years.

Fun in the sun yesterday
Some fancied a swim, one lad said " I had enough of swimming in the Mediterrean"
Another told me " the government killed my fiancée" he had just finished his university course as the government continued their killing spree against the ethnic black tribes in Sudan.
Stories you find hard to listen to because they lay heavily on you, but ensuring these lads can now have a happy safe life can be achieved, we know. Our boys who came a year and a half ago are now starting to have a normal life, many with girlfriends, some already with jobs and all speaking French.

A French friend has mailed with the following VE day message:
"Ouffffffff.
Notre pays est provisoirement sauvé. Et pourtant je suis triste.
Triste parce qu'alors que nous allons fêter la libération de l'Europe du fascisme, la graine n'est pas morte. Des anglais, des américains et des russes sont morts pour la France.
Dans mon petit village que j'ai aimé pour sa douceur et son humour, dans lequel je me suis investie avec mon nom en off, 30 personnes pensent que le front national est une solution à leur absence de bonheur.
Aujourd'hui je vais essayer de planter des fleurs.

Today is a public holiday in France, the 8th May marking the end of the second world war. France had been liberated a year earlier from the Nazi occupation and it is sad that today 72 years later some 10 million French citizens have voted for a party with clear fascist roots.
Le Pen has tried to get away from that identity, but thousands of her militants are hate filled bigots. It is said that she will try to rename and rebrand the party - but until they purge the party of these neo-nazis they will continue to be viewed with suspicion.

It was not a movie, it was people and their lives
It was not a movie it was people and their lives.
I went to Verfeil this morning to take a car full of boys to the market.
There I sat and talked to a distraught young Afghan.
He explained his family lived right next to the border with Pakistan and he had heard on his news that there was shelling along the border and the news was talking about an area very close to his house.
He was trying to get in touch with family and suddenly he got through to his brother.
A mortar shell had hit the family home and destroyed it totally, the family had get out just minutes before. At that time they were all safe but with graphic video we were at the scene and could hear the constant shots
from the Pakistani Taliban, smoke and the ruined house filled the screen.
Then we lost the line, frantically the lad kept trying to get back in touch. Eventually he did and we could see the Afghan army arriving amidst a barrage of gun fire, then the link was lost again.
By this time the lad was shaking and I was in floods of tears. The boys getting up went to offer sympathy before the three takers for the market and I left.
We had a nice time at the market with me enjoying buying the boys a few second hand clothes at the vide dressing. Did a bit of " girl watching " whilst we had our coffees then I took them back.
Tonight we are hoping to get the group to " bal sur le halle" at Caylus and I will let you know the news from the young man about his family and if they are still alive and where they will go.
It has left me shaken and I can only imagine how that poor young man must be feeling.
Val says again, we do not realise how lucky we have been with our lives and yet another example why when we can help someone we should, " there but for the grace of God "

Macron ahead in the polls but we no longer have the faith we had in polls.
How much will the letters and fake documents released on Friday affect voting.
I must admit it was something we were expecting. Saturday was a day in France where no campaigning is allowed to give voters the chance to quietly reflect before voting today.
There are rumours there will be law suits after the election.
Cross your fingers everyone and hope this awful threat of a Le Pen government is just a dark nightmare that never happens.

Saving a paper horse
Actually a papier maché model of a life size horse, with 121 pieces, which was used by veterinary students in the 19thC at the University of Toulouse vet school.
A famous professor, Dr Auzaux, in the early 1800s made the model to help students understand anatomy. There are other models too, including a life size turkey and others which could be classed as monuments historiques.
The Ecole Veterinaire is a valuable teaching and research centre in Toulouse which holds regular clinics for small animals - we have had our dog treated there on a couple of occasions for complaints which have baffled local vets.
The vintage teaching aids need 25000 euros for restoration and a crowdfunding scheme has been set up at https://www.commeon.com/fr/projet/restaurez-les-modeles-dauzoux

A great evening at Bruniquel
A great night last night at Bruniquel in the Chateau, so many supporters turned up that the chateau grounds and rooms were packed. All good news for the young men who we were raising money for.
For Malc and I it was a great pleasure to see all our young friends from St. Antonin, Bruniquel, Realville, Castelsarrasin and now Verfeil.
We were all so, so happy, it was wonderful to see all the different young men together.
It was definitely a French evening, long live France and freedom.

We decided we need to get the poele in the gite cleaned so needed a chimney sweep. Malc searched for his card to no avail. When I realised what he was getting frustrated about I asked if he had searched on TAG... always my first recourse for such things. Sure enough three chimney sweepers were there with contact details.

A bit of Paris for sale
An auction sale of panels from the famous Paris bridge le Pont des Arts will take place on Saturday 13th May in Paris and on line. In aid of associations supporting refugees in the capital the sale is the result of the thousands of locks fastened by lovers to the bridge. The safety of the bridge was threatened so the panels were removed and replaced with glass.
The city council commissioned designs for the sale of the locks and various keep-sakes have been fabricated using recycled material and council artisans. 165 lots are being offered, 150 bunches of locks and 15 bridge panels.
Organisers hope buyers will opt for a genuine bit of Paris, placed there by lovers and sold to help others.

The Toulouse Theatre du Capitole is open to the public on 6th and 7th May (ie next weekend) from 11h - 19h as part of the "Tous a l'opera" campaign.
As well as watching rehearsals and seeing how the opera house prepares a production there will be discussions and exhibitions. The idea is to bring the opera and ballet to a wider public rather than the elitist image they possess at present.
24 opera houses throughout France will take part and France 3 TV will broadcast a ballet "La Reine Morte" by Kader Belabi, the director of Toulouse Opera, and a documentary showing how children can become involved, recorded at the Montpellier opera.
However, the programmes will be broadcast at midnight on Saturday, not quite so inclusive one might think.

This was the worst debate in my lifetime! Absolutely terrible. I'm exhausted! But she showed what a liar she is, sniggering, vulgar with no proposition to make but only attacks and lies. I'm in awe of his patience and self control, I'd have gone nuclear within minutes!

It was an exhausting debate and I do not know how Macron kept his cool. I felt he came out top but it is hard to know when you are biased. I had a terrible night worrying about what would happen if Le Pen won.
What would happen to our refugee boys, what would happen to my donkeys if we felt we had to leave and amidst all the worrying I discovered the cat Nipolena who was cuddling had a tick under her chin. So at 4 am we were holding down a cat trying to detach a tick, with a special tick fork.
I blame Marine Le Pen for it all... even the tick, probably an FN agent!!

Become a helper
I think you can all see the pleasure Malc and I get helping someone less fortunate, in this instance refugees.
We have 18 new young men at a local village Verfeil sur Seye and on Tuesday 9th at 17 h we are asking anyone who would like to help or be involved to come to a meeting in a house in the village which has a good sized meeting room called " Le Petit Verfeilaise"
Not sure of the spelling of that one, will look it up.It is the big house belonging to the young community.
It is in the road from the square down to the Mairie.
We really do need help and we encourage local people to visit and get the boys used to French, life trips to the market, shops etc.
Come and meet Anais Rondeau and other helpers and let us dicuss how we can help them.

Bearded vultures released
The bird, also known as a lammergaier, is being reintroduced into the high causses in Aveyron by the LPO (French equivalent of the RSPB). The plan is to create a group of these birds - the only one of its genus - which will re-populate the area from the pre-Alps to the Pyrenees. The birds were raised in captivity in Spain and Hungary.

On TV tonight
The final debate with Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron head to head will be shown on TF1 and France 2 television chains this evening at 20h30 (8.30pm). After negotiations (and some coin tossing) between two parties it has been agreed that Le Pen will be on the left of the screen and Macron on the right. The temperature will be 19ºC and the candidates will be seated. Since no agreement was made on who would ask the questions (it had to be a man and a woman) the organisers chose the political correspondents of each chain. These debates have often proved decisive in the past, so there is high expectancy.

Nous sommes le mercredi trois mai
A vrai dire, nous ne l'avons pas fait exprès... mais on pourrait dire que ça tombe pile-poil dans l'actualité !
Venir faire la fête ce vendredi 5 mai aux Châteaux de Bruniquel : "4 bonnes raisons gratuites, c'est cadeau mon amie !"
- pour soutenir l'accueil des réfugiés accueillis ici depuis quelques mois et récemment des nouveaux à Verfeil,
c'est à dire ni plus ni moins qu'affirmer haut et fort l'hospitalité de nos villages
et votre simple solidarité pour tous les humains, quelle que soit leur couleur ! - pour se rencontrer et discuter de ce qui nous turlupine tou-te-s en ce moment : "Alors dimanche... ? Oui mais non ! Mais non mais oui ! Et après..." ;
- pour s'amuser comme des fous avec un spectacle de clowns et la grosse patate rythmée des ArtsSonneuRs ;
- pour déguster des bons petits plats (cuisine afghane et tartes-quiches françaises) entre ami-e-s.

A bit damp in the fields and gardens so a lot of damp smelling pets around the place.. the smell of wet dog in every room, as they follow us about.
I am worried today about the forth coming elections.
Melenchon who was fourth in the first round and did exceptionally well for him, has refused to say who to vote for and even though he does not advocate voting for Le Pen, he does not, like Fillon and Hamon, say vote for Macron. So we possibly have many of his supporters abstaining or voting "blanc", putting a blank vote in the box.
Macron is holding up remarkably well to the attacks from Le Pen but nothing is assured as we know from Brexit and the " terrible Trump" fiasco.
France must try and fight off the threat of Le Pen and her ultra right wing cronies, for the French, and for all us immigrants here.
We will no longer be European and I doubt Le Pen will value our rights, France for the French being her slogan.
I will cheer myself up by going to see how our new boys are settling in. It takes a week or two for them to enjoy some proper sleep, not being frozen sleeping on the streets of Paris, having proper meals and feeling safe.
There I have cheered myself up already thinking of helping these lovely lads.
Last night I received messages from them on facebook which is a good way to learn names, seeing their picture next to a name.

Another good book swap
Super book swap, lots of books, lots of people and John Dawson did a very good trade on selling the St.Antonin pictures to raise money for the young refugees. Two people who could not make the swap are still interested in the power point presentation, so more money to come.
Paul Jack invited Malc, John and I to he and his partner Mark's lovely bed and breakfast in the main street in St. Antonin, "Maison Belmont" . We were delighted to see some of the pictures he had downloaded and had framed a number in each bedroom. Fascinating pictures, I love local history.
Lots of toiletries delivered, two pair of useful looking boots/ shoes, towels, pillows, a good haul.
On the book front I am always amazed how we find lovely new books every time and even though I have books here still to read, I cannot resist.
Once again thanks to Paul and Mark for storing the books for us each month. It is a big help.

Timber and canoes went with a crash
The wind last night was really strong here and suddenly what sounded like glass breaking and crashing was heard from the gite next door. It was too wet and windy to venture out, but later we were relieved to know it was the canoes falling over onto the bottle bin. Strangely the canoes landed in a neat line.
Branches down and a conifer tree at such an odd dangerous angle we decided it was safer to take it down... now we need a strong man, Shaban I think that is you.
Malc sat after his work cutting down the tree but only to have the dogs saying" think it is tea time Dad"

Mayday parades
One of the traditional activities on the first of May is the marches arranged by the labour unions. One leading union, the CFTD, has decided to shun the main parades in Toulouse and assemble at Bruniquel. It is described as a mark of solidarity with the migrants/refugees, 25 of whom have been housed in the former gendarmerie in the village. This union is one of the few to call clearly for a pro-Macron vote, the CGT and others advising members not to vote FN.
