The beach at Barcares, near Perpignan, attracts many visitors, but when the steamer "Lydia" stranded on the beach 50 years ago few knew that she too would become a landmark visitor attraction. One of the world's oldest liners in the last half century the ship has been re-furbished and used as a discotheque and casino, and now part of the accommodation has been dedicated to a museum retracing the glories of her cruising days.
The maire of Barcares would like to see some of her cabins restored for holiday accommodation, as it was originally intended.

NB -interesting to note that although in English ships are one of the few inanimate objects to be assigned a gender (ships are feminine) in French she is masculine - despite her name - because
paquebot is masculine.
