Old Najac photos

Putting this together was a project spread over a few years of dark evenings and wet days.
The pictures came from all sorts of sources.  Some of the old ones of the fortress came from the National Archives in Paris and M. Montalivet,  the owner, had never seen the one of the little painted chapel ceiling before (It is now in the most recent guidebook as the paint has all but disappeared)
Yes Najac looked run down in the old photos but all the garden plots and paths on the hillside are well cultivated whereas now they have mostly disappeared under scrub and brambles.
Jan and Cora Gordon wrote a book “Two Vagabonds in Languedoc” about their long stay in Najac in the 1920’s.  This was re-published a few years ago in paperback and at that time I was given access to scans of the original artwork for some of the images from the book.  Amazon currently have two copies.  I can recommend it.
Glad you enjoyed the show.
