Brother held in Annecy murder case

Three British people and a French cyclist were shot in the French Alps last September and two children in the car survived. Both French and British police have been co-operating in enquiries and today the brother of the businessman Saad al-Hilli was arrested by Surrey police.
Theories from mafia to plain robbery have been advanced, but a family feud seems to be the line favoured by investigators.
The 4 year old daughter Zeena was found alive under her mother's body 8 hours after gendarmes arrived on the scene.
Just checked the charge   is " suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder."

Perle still looking for a home

Malc kindly went in to the vets at Laguepie this morning,  as I was soaking up the poetry of Sylvia Plath in my Fifi Poetry group meeting. The dog lost is a male that was lost in February by an English couple who had found it a year earlier and it had attached itself to them. That dog is still missing so if anyone has found a hunting dog email Angela on       d.cantrill@orange.fr
That means Perle of the skinny body and long ears still needs a family. We must have a corner she could fit in ... but Malc says we have NOT.

VAL SAYS - THIS IS A SCAM
Lizzie Jewels is a TAG reader and has had posts on TAG. Someone will know better than me, but I think she is travelling at the moment. It sounds as if  she has had documents stolen. Put it this way I will not be replying or sending any money . What a blinkin' cheek some thieves have.

Athos settles in to his new home

Good morning, Val.
Athos is at his most rewarding first thing in the morning , when whoever gets up first is subject to the most enthusiastic welcome ever. Athos jumps around like a lamb, and as the floors are wood, he usually manages to skid a fair distance. He then sticks to that person like a limpet for as long as it takes to find his lead and take him out for the first walk of the day.

He is a lovely dog, but is still really scarred from his treatment by his first owners. He is scared of loud noises and of people, and his first instinct is to run for the hills as soon as he encounters anything like that. After his early disappearance and return to us, he has given me the slip twice, both times whilst on a lead and spooked by other people. I think it will be a long time before he relaxes and realises that not everyone means him harm.

We absolutely love him, though, and are very grateful to TAGlines and to Maeva for bringing him to us. I've sent Maeva a few pictures, but unfortunately one or other of us is also in the shot. I've promised to send her decent pictures of Athos on his own as soon as I take some, and I'll send them to you in case any of your readers are interested.
 All the best.
 Sarah

After Jerome Cahuzac's personal humiliation with his tax dodging scheme, the seat in Villeneuve sur Lot was always going to be a difficult one for the Socialists to win. The winner in the second round Jean-Louis Costes achieved 53 % of the vote narrowly defeating the far right. Jean Louis Costes is the Maire of Fumel

One of my brain waves.

Why don't we make a summer kitchen in the dependance ( will you shoo  those hens out of the hall, Malc) We have enough pots and glasses to leave them downstairs and then when we entertain in the grange we do not have to send pots up and down in a basket to the kitchen on the second floor.
Why have we not considered it earlier? We have what we call the dependance next to the grange  which has a sink already, all we need in there is a cupboard which could hold the pots and hey presto, a summer kitchen. Has anybody got a kitchen type cupboard that could hold pots we could buy?

Betty who used to be Effy is happy

Hi
I have space in my work shop here for the kit car builders , please let them know. [ Jo lives near La Fouillade, may be a bit far from Arnac Jo]

Re pics of Betty if I had the technical know how I could send a pic but I don't!! But she is very happy and enjoying living with us , accepted by the others , loves a cuddle and I mean a cuddle and a real gluton eats anything banna,s, courgettes aubergine advocate  as well as her diet of fresh meat and fish. I think she is a happy girl

Two children dead, two between life and death

Four children between the ages of 4 and 8 were playing by a lake on an indutrial estate in the Val-d'Oise region. A man who lived in a caravan nearby says he had often stopped the children from throwing stones and branches in the river and playing there. The four children are from 3 different mothers, and the mothers are now having psychiatric help. Two children died and two others are in a critical state. One must assume that the banks were too high to scramble up.
As I scrawl the papers looking for French news these sort of incidents throughout France with rivers, lakes, swimming pools seeing death after death of small children, it reminds me of a document I once had.
When I had my first antiquarian bookshop in Bolton I bought some documents from a local Doctor of which one of his great grandparents had been the first coroner of Bolton. These were important documents which I sold to Bolton Libraries (my former employer) Local History Department. The interesting thing reading them was how it was so obvious that young children were dying in ordinary homes by falling in  domestic fires. It was before the time when parents realised having a fire guard was essential. The situation here with pools and rivers flags up to me that same problem of infant deaths.

Sally says     I enjoy the conflation of "scan" and "trawl" into "scrawl" .....a real journalist's word?

Cazelles' Cross

In between St. Martial and Mas del Sol is a cross dedicated to one of the Cazelles family. Most of the dedication is worn away leaving the cross with lovely tones of moss and  lichen. It is at and around  this cross that we all enjoy some of our best walks. The dogs love it as there are open fields with rabbits to chase and woods to snuffle in. Malc and I love it as in the spring there are fields of orchids and in late spring banks along the roadside of  sweet peas and honeysuckle, as there was this morning.
A few years ago we decided if ever there was a spot to spend eternity this was the one for us. No traffic noise, just bird song and calm beautiful landscapes and the fact that with the dogs we have spent so many happy times there we felt it was an ideal place to rest. To my younger readers this may seem rather a morbid subject but in fact for us we have a serenity and sense of peace knowing where our spirits will be.
In France you cannot go scattering ashes willy, nilly around the countryside and it maybe we would never get permission to scatter ashes there. That does not matter, it is the knowledge that we will mentally have our spirits in that spot which is the important thing. .. and as I have mentioned earlier that little beggar Daisy should already be waiting there for us.

The path of the righteous, or is it " self righteous"

Ever since we arrived in France there has always been a small faction of what I can only describe as self righteous people. You will know the ones I mean, they start immediately in any group accessing your level and mastery of French, and they of course all mix with French friends because their French is  so perfect. They then pontificate about how you have to speak the language and decry any in their midst if they have not yet mastered the nuances of French. I have sat through many a tirade feeling sorry for often elderly compatriots who want to learn French but struggle, things are just not so easy for the elderly. One man actually said to me " So what is he saying I am not allowed to live in France as I cannot yet speak the language"  What is always interesting is the ones who pontificate about mixing, speaking French are often the ones who do not have a rapport with people in any language. I can think of two people who have more French friends than you can imagine simply by joining French clubs, smiling and being charming. Their French will come in time but let us give them a chance.
My  level of French is passable by the way  and improving steadily, and I love being in a gathering be it with French, Dutch, German or English  friends.

Why I love TAG readers

Many thanks for the TAGlines input. My videos are now safely on their way toMontpezat de Quercy, chez Suzanne Pirie for her grandsons. I will send you a little cheque of thanks for a charity. Who do I make it out to?
Celia
Val says What a generous offer, Celia gives away 50 videos and then pays one of TAG charities, does your heart good that sort of generosity of spirit. Many thanks

Is there someone looking for Perle?

TAG has had an email from Jenny saying when she was in the vets at Laguepie she saw a notice up for a lost dog. When getting home and reading TAG it dawned on her that the dog may be Perle.
Perle was taken in to  the dog pound at St. Antonin after being lost in the woods for weeks. The dog could not cope with being in a pen and was very nervous so Maeva one of the carers who TAG now has a good rapport with took her home and in to her care. We have passed this news on to Maeva and she will research if it is the same dog. We will cross fingers that Perle' s owner can be traced.
It is now against the law not to have your pet chipped or identified and if a dog is found roaming, is not chipped and is taken in to the dog pound, they spend 8 days searching for the owner. After that time if the owner is not found your pet becomes the property of the Mairie and can be passed on to a new owner who will then have to have it chipped. My feeling is if you have so little regard for your pet that you will not identify it, you do not deserve to keep it. Responsible ownership it is called.
Val says I have had contact with Maeva and I have said I would go into the vets tomorrow and get information about the lost dog.

Do Gendarmes increase their presence in summer?

While out on a trip to Caussade yesterday we passed lots of Gendarmes, both driving around and stationed at the roadside and roundabouts, doing spot checks on motorists. Is it my imagination or do they increase their presence during the summer?
Just thought it would be worth reminding everyone to make sure they have the correct documents inside their cars. A friend received an on the spot fine the other day when she was pulled over for only slowing down rather than stopping at a solid white line, and then not having her driving licence and car registration certificate with her.
Debbie
Val says This was happening in St. Antonin a week ago on all roads in and out.
We always joke that their presence is more noticeable at the end of the month if they need to get their quotas up.
The friend would get fined for not fully stopping at the white line. If you have not got your documents you are allowed a number of days to take them in to the Gendarmerie.
