Nature's firework display
The Perseid meteor shower will pass through the earth's atmosphere tonight, for some hours after midnight. The forecast (see the meteo panel aside) is for a clear night, though the moon rising at 11h45 may cause some light difficulties.
The meteorites, apparently debris from the Swift/Tuttle comet, may fall as often as two or three every minute. So if you have been to see local fireworks such as at Laguepie, stay up a while for shooting stars.

How many politicians does it take to change a lightbulb?

Thanks for your interesting post about the local nuclear power station, especially the comment about all cars being electric after 2040 which many governments, including the UK and France, have proposed..
That’s only 23 years away.
By some estimates, to change all European cars to electric by 2040, Europe will need 40% more electricity generating capacity costing € 1.4 trillion (1.4 million million euros) and this is without replacing all the old power stations which will reach the end of their life during this period.
When the new Hinkley Point power station opens in 2025 (latest date announced) it will be 18 years since the project was first given the go-ahead.
It has also been estimated that there is only enough lithium reserve in the world to last for 17 years when all these electric cars and other devices are up and running.

Is generated by the nuclear power station at Golfech in Tarn and Garonne. Presently the No 1 reactor is closed for maintenance, an operation involving up to 2000 employees. Normally the reactor area is completely sealed, all monitoring done from the central control room, with the aid of video surveillance. The workers who are going into the area are strictly controlled for radio activity and must observe stringent standards of protection and wear sterile clothing. The plant produces 5% of all France's electricity, enough to power eight local departments.
The government's energy policy is to phase out nuclear power to be replaced by renewable energy and economies. It seems a difficult task, especially if cars are to become electric after 2040.

Donkey sanctuary still busy
Dear donkey lovers

Today we sit with 24 donkeys, 5 dogs and 9 cats. Over the past few weeks 2 new donkeys have come in, 3 donkeys were delivered to a lovely new home and 2 cats have been reserved for collection soon.
When I wrote on facebook about little Bambi my post reached 4112 people, yes over 4000 shares ! Normally we only reach a few hundred. I don't usually ask for funds as we usually scrape through the year with donations and our fund raising lunches but its been far too hot to think about organising and cooking for 35 people so if any of those 4112 people who shared our news or indeed any of YOU can afford to make a tiny donation it would make all the difference to our efforts here and help us to help even more needy animals. Thank you in advance, your donation will help to replenish our stocks of hay/straw/bedding. We have almost zero grass now in the fields and are just starting to feed bigger quantities of hay and barley straw to keep everyone happy and stop them trying to escape !!
For those folks local to us I have the need of volunteers from say 10 till 12 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, or if you cant make those important donkey times there's always lots of other jobs to be done during the day.
If I can think of an interesting menu I'm planning a lunch at the beginning of September, so will be looking for anyone who can cook for 6/8 people so that makes it less work for one person.

Pool robot vacuum needed
How long do pool vacuums last? We have had two which have lasted four years each and then went kaput. At the price they are now I think we need to buy second hand. Any one with a pool vacuum for sale?

I am amazed with the political situation " Brexit" that houses are still selling and often still to the British. We have at least three friends who have sold in the last few weeks, admittedly accepting price cuts, but when you are ready to leave I think you have to accept the market as it is.
In the nearly 16 years we have been here many of our friends from that time have gone back to the UK or indeed passed on.
How many when they go back are happy we wonder? After such a good life here I cannot imagine going back to the traffic, the dull grey skies and rain... and yet each person has reasons to return, often family being high on the list.
Someone who has returned cited they were worried one or other of the partners might die and then what would happen? If you are left on your own I think you would be lost for some time whichever country you lived in.
Going back as earning a living here is not easy, I can understand. If you are not retired and need to work life can be hard, but it can be done and on this site there are adverts for people working who have more business than they can cope with. They do tend to be builders and gardeners or offering services to expats and seasonal residents with limited French.
I was shocked to hear yesterday from some French friends that two different quotes had been received for a gardening job. One quote was for 1200 euros another for 200, easy to guess which quote was chosen.
If you have good business acumen you can do well here but giving mad quotes soon gets a business a bad reputation.
Knowing the market, working hard and showing a bit of iniative can work here as it does in the UK. What you have to cope with here is the French bureaucracy and many of us struggle with this.

Abandoned coffins
Police at Firmi, Aveyron, are investigating how a number of coffins (fortunately unused) came to be dumped by the roadside. The owner of the land says it is often used as an informal dump, but this is the most unusual case he has come across. In fact the coffins have been there a couple of weeks now and have provoked some interest from passers by.
Police have no leads to go on, but think they were an unexpected cargo in a stolen van.

We had lunch on their covered terrace last week on the opening day of the restaurant.
We four were very happy with the experience - and will certainly go again.
4 aperitifs, 4 menus, 2 75cl carafes of rouge, 1 coffee and a small tip cost 80 euros
The food was very good indeed, and very generous. The vegetables were all fresh, everything was well prepared and the service was smiling.

Master craftsmen in Laguiole have forged seven exceptional examples of their world famous knives. Entirely created and decorated by hand and using Aubrac cattle horn for the handles, the knives are to auctioned on-line to raise funds for the restoration of the famous Taureau statue. When friends asked this young couple if they could convert their van into a "camping car" it spawned a whole new enterprise. Designing modular furniture which can be installed (and removed) in a matter of minutes meant the family could quickly and cheaply convert the traditional white van into a smart camper. They undertake all the work themselves, adapting the electrics to provide mains and battery power to the fridge and cooker, cutting and assembling the modules, even sewing the fabric seat covers and curtains. Based at Vaissac in Tarn and Garonne and with prices from about 4000 euros, the small business has boomed and its order book is full.

Memories of a Senegalese batallion in Septfonds
How interesting to see a photo like this, reminding us of our history. The coloured soldiers were based at Montauban and were a battalion of Senegalese Rifles. Here they are guarding a car in Septfonds outside the Hotel Lamic ( is it still there that hotel?)
This batallion of soldiers were guarding the Jews in the camp at Septfonds and the Spaniards. They had two Spanish speaking interpreters.

Ces deux Tirailleurs Sénégalais qui montent la garde devant ce véhicule garé devant l' Hôtel Lamic, rue de la République à Septfonds, appartiennent probablement au bataillon du 16ème R.T.S. ((Régiment de Tirailleurs Sénégalais), régiment basé et présent à la caserne Guibert de Montauban de 1922 à 1940(1), et dont un bataillon a été affecté à la surveillance du camp de Judes à partir de mars 1939.
Que font-ils là ? Peut-être mis à la disposition de deux interprètes "embauchés" par le service de garde du camp pour transmettre les ordres en espagnol. Ces interprètes étaient "logés dans un hôtel de Septfonds"(2)

Historic local chateau destroyed
The 16th century Chateau de Lezignac, near Graulhet in the Tarn was badly damaged by fire on Monday afternoon (7th August). Privately owned the chateau was for many years owned by the clergy and was inscribed as an historic monument in 1977.
Unoccupied at the time, the various attempts to rehabilitate or even sell the chateau as a centre for historic re-enactments and concerts have come to nothing. The structure suffered considerable damage in the fire.

Penny Smith comes each month to the book swap and with her business " A stitch in time" she offers curtain and dressmaking and repairs. Today she was offering a range of aprons " retro pinnies" for sale.
She says:
I am Penny and I have my own business called ‘A Stitch in Time’ offering sewing alterations or creation of sewing projects from scratch. Clients more usual requests are to turn up skirts or trousers, change the styling of a sleeve, transform a dress to a skirt, trousers into shorts and sometimes, if my magic wand is really on form, I can even make clothes (a bit) larger! The more unusual requests have been to design and create pool table covers, exterior quality futon mattress covers, poolside cushion covers…. So if you need something sewing, not sure if it is possible, ask me you might be surprised and the reply!
Recently, I have set up a new line ‘Penny’s Pinnies’ which are mainly retro-style aprons for those special occasions to protect your lovely outfit during those dinner parties or just to add a bit of spice to the kitchen!

Caylus water: is it really safe?
After the water was declared safe to drink without boiling, a local expert has advised local residents to be wary, as the source of the pollution has not been identified and eradicated.
Louis Courbes a hydrogeologist has written to various bodies to suggest that more precautions, including more rigorous testing, should be introduced. Also the source of the pollution probably being animal waste coming from (and used as fertiliser) local agricultural exploitation will still be present and he demands that investigations should be carried out. He advises residents to raise the matter with their doctors.

Real sundried tomatoes
Having seen recommendations everywhere to dry tomatoes in the oven and store in oil, last year someone suggested that I tried drying them in the local sunshine. So when temperatures are above 30°C that is what I do. Just cut them in half, de-seed them and sit them on a cake cooling rack on the terrace in full sunshine for a day, turning them over about half way through. Bring them in as it starts to get cooler and if you feel they are not dry enough put them out again the next day.
If you are concerned about flys cover them with netting but I have not found them a problem.
Rather than store them in oil, store them in the freezer where they keep wonderfully for a year and are a low calorie snack.
I discovered a very unexpected and superb use this year when I mixed the remains of last years bag with some of last years home made tomato passata. The result was a thick and so tasty tomato sauce which could have been diluted to be hot or cold tomato soup or used as it was for a rich tomato sauce or base for a bolognaise sauce.

Since the end of June the tap water at Mouillac and Caylus has been unfit to drink without being boiled. The restrictions also apply to Lacapelle Livron, Loze, Puylagarde and St Projet.

Take care of your children on holiday.
Athos eats the rest of a small Belgian child whose parents did not pay the full rental for the hire of one of the gîtes. He enjoyed his meal but found the child a little salty, must be all those moules and frites!

Giant what?
Hi Val
Can anyone identify this giant caterpillar please. I don't think it's the giant emperor moth because of its smooth skin. When the dogs first found it I think it was much bigger, sausage size, but had shrunk as it moved away! Can it do that to scare away predators?

It's not just us
For almost sixteen years Varen in Tarn and Garonne has been our home. We love it here: a lovely riverside location; interesting medieval architecture; an impressive deanery and church, with history to match. Nowadays the village has the essential commerces and an excellent medical centre, and a restaurant worth a visit in itself. Varen Regatta
Down by the Moulin for the 14th successive year you will be able to participate in a fun regatta, or a regatta for fun!!
You will need to be down by the slipway at 9.30 to 10.30 am to sign on and racing will start at 11 am.
Usual rules apply.
Canoes and life jackets are provided. Afterwards stay for a picnic, tables and benches can be reserved if you want to stay.
Afterwards join in the fun for a game of boules, bring your balls for this.

Ho loves the attention and the residents love him and look forward greatly to his visits. Here he is with Sash, the Activities Co-ordinator who recruited us!

New boulangerie at Laguepie
Situated by the old Casino premises, alongside the new tourist information centre, is a "pop-up" boulangerie. Supplied by the Maison Bedel in Sanvensa the new shop has a selection of bread, savouries and cakes. The village has been without a bakery for seven months now, though there are "depots de pain" in the two supermarkets, as well as RAGT.

Star gazing this Thursday
The "nuit des etoiles" at Espinas last week was postponed due to cloudy skies, but with a clear night in prospect this week you will be welcome on Thursday, 3rd August, from 9.30pm (21h30) when the telescopes will be mounted and star gazing from 22h (10pm).
Bring a blanket if you are to lie on the ground and a woolly (though 24ºC expected). By the Espinas/Carrendier/Mordagne crossroads on the D75.

Parisot Arts Festival Friday 11th August - Sunday 13th inclusive. 10am - 8pm(lunchtime 1pm-3pm). Exhibits throughout the village.
Festival outdoor concerts (LatinAmerican music) in the grounds of Chateau de l’Astorguie, 39 rue de la Mairie, Parisot village. Friday 11th at 9pm and Saturday 12th at 9pm.
