Claude Nicaud will be on France 2
Hi ValThe artist in the photo is Claude Nicaud, famous for his 'Poppy' paintings. His gallery at Brousse is well worth a visit and of course, the drive along the corniche is spectacular.
How lucky we are to be close to fabulous scenery and talented artists.

Val says this refers to some earlier photos, with takes being shot for the villagemost preferred by the French for this years season. It is shown later in the year on France 2

Grease at Espinas
Hi Val, was wondering if you could put this poster up on Tag lines.
The text will be in French and some of the songs are translated into French but half of them are the originals in English.
The level of singing and dancing and acting from this team of young, local, people is
brilliant and the stage director .... well not for me to say, as it is Jean Louis, my husband!
But definately not to be missed!
.
Organised by L'association 'Même Sans le Train' et La Lyre de Castelsarrasin.
Renseignements 05 63 95 01 81
No reservations possible so best to get there in good time.
Best wishes Rachel
Val says Malc would hate it but I think it will be fun and fancy going, any ladies out there who fancy coming with me?

"A good life if you are retired," I was told.
France is “an exceptionally gifted student who sits loafing around at the back of the class, doing nothing.” That is the damning assessment of the country’s economy by Medef chief Pierre Gattaz. His gloomy comment came a week after the economic think tank OECD said in its annual report that France needs a massive drive to simplify everything from the labour code to taxes and business regulations. Gattaz said the labyrinthine rules and regulations governing business were the cause of the country’s stubbornly high unemployment, currently at nearly 3.5 million people, which he described as “the most serious injustice suffered by the French.”
Val says rules, regulations and over high taxation. I met a lady who had sold up here a couple of years ago to return back to the UK. Her working husband just could not afford the taxes here handing over half of what he earned to the government in taxes. She told me now he is back in the UK earning the same amount but his take home pay is quite different, meaning they can live decently and save a little. She felt France is OK for retired people but too difficult if you wanted to work. Comments to taglines82@gmail.com
New cave replica to open
At Pont d'Arc in Ardeche the Grotte Chauvet is a perfect replica of the part of a series of underground galleries where can be found some of the world's oldest and finest cave paintings. To be inaugurated today (Saturday 11 April) the building will open to the public on 25th April.
Discovered in 1999 by three potholers one called Chauvet after whom the cave has been named), the grotto has paintings made some 36000 years ago. Rather than opening the site to the public, with the risks of damage and deterioration seen in sites such as Lascaux (Dordogne) it was decided to construct a replica.
Much older than Lascaux the paintings depict a range of animals long disappeared from western Europe, such as lions, rhinoceros and mammoth as well as a 7 metre long wall of horses. Over 400 animals of 14 species are depicted, using the natural contours of the cave walls. The replica cave is about one third the size of the original and the site will also house a visitor centre and museum.

Fete de Spring Break at Toulouse,
Un Spring Break a lieu à Toulouse ce week-end. the Depeche tells us for the Spring break in Toulouse a veritable week end of sex, alcohol and bimbos is planned" the biggest Spring Break in France on the idea imported by the Americans of course. The idea comes from films such as American Pie, Spring Breakers and Piranha 3D. The age group expected are netween 18 and 25 and between 6,000 people will participate. It all commenced at la discothèque La Dune last night. There will be an election of Miss Spring Break, beach volley, strip poker. The pass for the week end is 20 euros and one amuses oneself in the spirit of the beach.
If we have any readers in this age group and I suspect not, it is a reminder of what we are missing, no longer being young.
Makes me glad I am more mature!

Killed this afternoon whilst doing his duty
At Decazeville today a young policeman of 35 Benoît Vautrin was on a " controle routier" / traffic control when an Audi A3 came speeding along at 95km/ h. A section of road Avenue du Lycée which was known for speeding. He was knocked over and thrown in the air hitting the front of the vehicle, then the road and thrown a few metres. The impact killed him. The two other young policeman working with him were terribly shocked and taken into care by the pompiers /ils ont été prise en charge.
The two speeders were caught and are now being held by the gendarmes.
This poor young policeman has a young wife and one year old baby and has just recently joined the Albi force coming from Paris.

It is all about Ruby today
Hi Val and Malc
Your new Ruby looks lovely - a real character. Some resemblance to Tramp, as in Lady and...?
Here's a song from me to welcome her (I'm probably not the only one to send it of course).
Malc keeps singing " Ruby Tuesday" which we think was the Rolling Stones.

This is the girl, Ruby
Just got back from the dentist to find Malc playing in the courtyard with Bonny and Ruby. Well Bonny was dozing in the sun and Ruby was playing with a pully toy.
Just come in and both Malc and Ruby have collapsed and are now fast asleep, not sure who has worn whom out, but I can guess.
I think Ruby must have some border collie in her genes as her ears prick up and head goes to one side when listening to commands. Sue from Poorpaws thinks she has briard in her, must look that up.
Just got back from a long walk with both the dogs. This girl is intelligent, in three days has learnt her name. She was a puppy with no name. I cannot yell you of her sad start in life at this point but I can tell you it has not affected her loving character. Being a puppy, she plays then sleeps, but she chooses to sleep with her head on your feet. She arrived last night but follows you everywhere listening and quickly learns. She is clean in the house and slept well with Bonny last night. Her English has come on in leaps and bounds although I am trying to teach in both languages.
If you want to come and see her with a view to adopting, drop us an email

Why are they allowed to get away with it
Local farmers are " en colère" / very angry yet again. They are still objecting to their limits on nitrates that the government has imposed for all of our safety, us, plants fish. The land is saturated with nitrates polluting rivers. The farmers are using too much manure that has not been left to rot.
So what did they do but go and tip truck loads of manure on the steps of the prefecture.
Were they all arrested and charged, or were they assaulted with riot gear?
No, then why not.
The good farmers and agriculteurs we like, the ones who seriously disregard common sense and directives, we don't.

A lively little number is fluffy 7month old Ruby
Any news, views, photos this morning appreciated. We are a bit under pressure as I have an early dentist appointment and a lively little number to walk beforehand.
Rubis prounced Ruby is gorgeous but much more lively than Eldo, chases the cats for a game and loves playing with, well anything. She is also good at finding lost things. She arrived late last night and stuffed Bonny's lost occitan neckerchief into my hand. I think it was in an open basket in the spare bedroom. I will take a picture of her later wearing it,

Pour the water down the sink
Throw the responchons in the bin

Little Laika was supposed to go to see a new owner on Wednesday. Then we got a phone call to say the lady had a nasty fall, had broken ribs and was in hospital, and there were complications. So the rehoming was off. To the lady who is a TAG reader who had the fall, we wish you well and hope you will be feeling better soon.
The little love Laika is still waiting. If you like tiny dogs could you find a prettier one?

Little pollen face
Dear Val and Malcolm,
Not just bees
Blackcaps are a migratory bird and I noticed this female in the prunus tree opposite the front door. At first I did not realise it was a blackcap, as its face was orange and it took a bit of research to discover that blackcaps are nectarivorous and that the orange face was in fact pollen.
Nectarivorous birds on a migratory stopover will feed on nectar from certain flowers. Over the course of 2-3 days this feeding supplies with them with a carbohydrate top up and will replenish their body mass which can be reduced as much as 50% from their migratory flight.

A whiff of trouble in Marseille
We have probably all been in close proximity of someone who, to be polite, was not too fragrant. Indeed the scent of wet dog, donkey and spraying cat is not unknown around Mas del Sol, but we try not to take it about with us.
But a Romany camp in Marseille is causing problems with certain bus drivers on the line serving the area where the travellers are installed. Lack of sanitary facilities at the camp mean that the people taking the bus are a bit ripe, causing some drivers to complain that their working conditions are insupportable, a condition confirmed by the Inspection du Travail.
The transport operators are sympathetic and are deep cleaning the buses and even considering withdrawing the service. A difficult balance between the rights of workers to have decent conditions and the rights of poor people to travel as freely as others. Rather than discriminating against the passengers one union suggested that money be spent on toilet blocks at the site.

salade de réspountchous
We have learnt the occitan spelling for responchons/ responchous is réspountchous, now we learn how to make a salad.
First gather the tips from the countryside, these wild asperges/ asparagus tips are highly prized in France.
Take a bunch of asperges and boil in salted water for 10 mins.
Hard boil 3 eggs
Fry some lardons
Chuck it all together with salt, pepper and vinegar

He makes the news when he is not even there
The French love Johnny Halliday, just cannot get enough of him.
At one of his properties in Marnes la Coquette in the Hauts de Seine, there was a party " trop arrosé" / drunken do. The guardian of the property fired a pistol in a jealous rage at someone. No one was hurt but the 46 year old man was placed "en garde à vue"/ arrested.
Now poor old Johnny who was not even there gets his picture in the headlines.

I stared at this sudden apparition wide eyed with astonishment. Remember that I was a thousand miles from any inhabited region. And yet this little fellow seemed neither lost, nor half dead with fatigue, nor starved or dying of thirst or fear. He looked nothing like a child lost in the middle of the desert, a thousand miles from any inhabited region.

Just part of the doggy world in this area
A message received from Sue at Poorpaws
Hi Val
Hi Val
Not sure if you know about Danielle. She is my mentor ! She is a fantastic lady who worked for many years in the humanity service in the eastern bloc then came to France and transferred her capabilities to working with animals. Her experience is phenominal and she is often called on by the police to help out in difficult situations. Once when a Pitbull attacked another dog the police called her whilst waiting for a marksman. Danielle went into the garden, bellowed “couché” at the dog, Pitbull hits the deck, Danielle clips a lead on and hands him over to the (not so !) strong arm of the law !!! She is in Castelnau Montratier and is a cruelty inspector for Brigitte Bardot Foundation and the SPA. She does kennelling (you could put that about) and rehoming. She will also leap to your aid to help wild animals, indeed had baby sangliers running around her place very recently ! Like me she receives no official financial aid relying on vide greniers, donations and adoptions. She is a wonderful person and I know she only lets dogs go to suitable homes. We work very closely together on the homing front.
Anyway, after all that spouting, she has suggested that the St. Antonin ladies call her so she can chat with them. her number is 0565219450/ mobile 0681745331. If she is not there PLEASE leave a message as she is obviously often outside.
Val says I have copied this letter to you all firstly so you know how much work goes on by doggy ladies behind the scenes rehoming stray, often badly treated dogs. Many of us know dogs can get put into refuges not under SPA control and simply get lost in the system and spend years if not their lives in cages.
Secondly to tell you that the tel numbers get you to a reliable kennelling service. If you were going to the UK leaving the dog as you pass would not be out of the way, if you were driving.
I will ask for more information on this service.

Day of (in)action
Many trades unions in the public sector have called for strikes and demonstrations tomorrow (Thursday 9th April) in protest at government austerity plans. The areas affected will be transport, education and government offices. There are meetings called in all major population centres in the region, including Albi, Montauban, Cahors and Toulouse.
This is in addition to the air traffic controllers strike starting today which will have a major impact on flights in and through France in the next 2/3 days.

New tram line opens - possibly
A symptom of our cynicism this morning when reading that the new tramline from Toulouse centre to the airport will open on Saturday; "If they are not on strike", we thought.
The new line will run every 15 minutes from Palais de Justice station, which can reached from the other lines, offering a traffic free link to Blagnac.
Unfortunately, due to a strike at Tisseo (Toulouse public transport) which will disturb traffic this weekend, the ceremonial opening planned for Friday evening has been cancelled.

A big story in France
The former Maire of Tours who was well respected for his work in the city of Tours, yesterday committed suicide. He was accused of taking " kick backs" for organising mock weddings with a Chinese employee who worked at the Mairie. The Chinese couples came to be married in the mairie by the Maire. He was about to be tried in the courts. Country life, is it good for you?
Both Malc and I woke up this morning groaning, every muscle in our bodies telling us we had been out in the garden working all day. We look terrible but the garden is starting to look good!
We heard this morning about a friend who used to live in St. Antonin and moved just over the border in Spain. She had been out in the country and had come into contact with the barbs of processional caterpillars and is covered in itchy weals.
Three other friends have all in the last few months had tick bites, one having odd side effects and needing penicillin, another being tested for Lyme's disease and the third having no bad effect. It is important to get the head of the tick out and remove the tick as soon as possible. Having a tick fork if you walk in the countryside is a good idea if you have a pet or not.
Malc and I suffered a few scratches from brambles/ ronces and few nettle stings/ piqûre d'ortie and aching muscles... but what a lovely day it was, lunching and having supper on the balcony.
It might sound as if we are complaining but we are not, we know we are the lucky ones.
Our evening walk with Bonny and Kenza the neighbours dog with a red sky as the sun disappeared just before nine finished for us, a perfect day.

Having a tick fork if you walk in the countryside is a good idea if you have a pet or not.

translating Le Petit Prince... slowly.
I took a good look around me. And I saw a quite extraordinary little man, who was examining me seriously. Here is the best portrait that, later I managed to do of him. But my drawing is much less charming than its model. It's not my fault.

Could this be the one for you? Seven month old Rubis
bonjour Val,
merci
xxx
Val says OK a quick translation. The girls have an emergency, a young dog badly treated, needs a family to foster till a home is found or even better a home. The dog is fine with other, dogs, cats and children but she has not lived yet with a family knowing only solitude. Her
rather pretty name is Rubis and what a cute beauty she is, at 7 months old. She would need a fenced garden and she is not yet puced but that is a priority.
I did think you might wonder how the girls knew she was OK with cats, children, dogs etc. Maeva and Katy have a house full of everything and they keep special dogs till they find homes. Katy for example has 7 dogs of her own.

The 2CV in Varen
Hi Val
This belongs to Jeannot, a Parisien (he insists on the 4 kisses) who spends his summers here with his wife Marise.
He was working on the car all last summer, and he's made a beautiful job of it.

What a lovely idea to help each other and make friends
Dear Val,
I contact you on behalf of Deddy, the clarinetist of the Martin's jazz band, because I would like to create contact with english people to communicate and increase my english level, and to help my daughter te be interested to communicate and to share relation with english children.
Today, i don't have a good english level, and my work ask me to increase it, and it's very difficult.
I'm working in Linde France enterprise. The companyproduce and commercialize gaz. I'm working in IS team (Information System). We have a lot of exchange (by mail and phone or meeting) with german team and indian team which have a very good english level, so it isn't easy for me.
I have a daughter, 9 old (10 at the end of july), and she is just starting english at school, and I would like to help her to progress without any difficulties. So I think that the best way is that she has an english girl friend with whom she can communicate.
I leave in a house, in Portet sur Garonne, in the suburbs of Toulouse. So I ask me if an english family will be interesting to inialize exchange?
Don't hesitate to come back to be, I'm not sure my request is very clear, sorry...
Thank you for your attention, and have a good day,
Best regards
Corinne Dupuy
Val says this could be nice opportunity for a little girl to improve her French and make a new friend and if there is someone who would like to correspond with Corinne to help her English I am sure one would improve their French at the same time.

Tiles for sale
Hi val,
I've got around 170 tuiles canals I need to shift - would you mind putting them on TAG?
Collection from the centre of St Antonin ASAP. Priced at 25c per tile, free for any cracked or broken.
These are the very common half round round tiles, and if you're in the conservation area it's necessary to use second hand tiles like these when they're visible.
Many thanks
Peter Quaife

Are you accident prone?
In our department in 2014 there were 1,285 accidents in and around the home. Chip pan fires were high on the list. Surprised me that, as I thought everyone used oven chips now.
Cutting fingers whilst cutting bread also up there high on the list. I ended up with eight stitches in my finger a couple of years ago doing this.
In the garden, equipment is dangerous, motoculteurs / rotavators and tronçonneuses / chainsaws are the worst apparently.
The elderly having accidents falling also high on the list. Then house fires also listed.
Take care everyone in and around the home and garden and croisez les doigts (cross your fingers) for a safe year.

Treating the box
Several readers have noticed the presence of a caterpillar which has infested their box hedges and bushes. In French known as "pyrale de buis" (lit. box pest) it can devastate growth of the useful and often iconic tree.
In Toulouse a biological treatment is being tested in municipal parks to try and halt the spread of the pest. The treatment started on the 6th April and it will be instructive to see if this moth and its offspring can be controlled without the use of chemical sprays.

What a little cutie
What a sweet face, big eyes, cute ears but Mr Rat in your baguette you really would not want. The tail of a rat was discovered by a mother as the family sat eating. The bread was from the hypermarché Carrefour in Ivry sur Seine.
When the cats and kestrels catch rats here I often think how sweet they look with those big eyes. Am I alone in this?

Traffickeurs - of babies
Ten people are being tried at Marseille for trafficking babies; some for buying, some for selling. The sellers are accused of targeting childless couples in traveller camps and offering to supply new born babies, who are mainly those of their family in Romania. The couple accused of buying a baby, for 4500 euros, plus a BMW (despite a collection around all the other caravans on the site they could not raise the 10000 euros demanded) say they simply wanted to save the baby "from the poubelle".
The biological father and the go-between (his sister-in-law), who face up to 10 years in prison, seem to wonder what all the fuss is about. According to their lawyer they think "ce n'est pas trop grave".

Well thats it, two British drivers lose their driving licences
Is it worth it! driving at such speed you automatically lose your " permis de conduire" Well that is what has happened to two Brits in the Lot on the autoroute A20 between Cahors and Toulouse, one driving at 183 km/ h and the other at 180km/h.
Serves them right, there is no excuse for speeds like that and I can tell you living here without a driving licence will not be easy. Stupid, stupid people risking the lives of themselves and others.

Dieudonné Costes of Septfonds
A taglines82 reader has given this information. Dieudonné was her grandfathers godfathers best friend .The reader is Sneachta Cailleach.
Dieudonné Costes (14 November 1892 – 18 May 1973) was a French aviator who set flight distance records. He was also a fighter ace during World War I.
Costes was born in Septfonds, Tarn-et-Garonne. He received a pilot diploma (brevet) on 26 September 1912. During World War I he served in the French Air Service, in MF55 and MF85 Farman squadrons, then in N506, N507 and N531 fighterNieuport squadrons, on the Balkan front. He scored there 8 victories (6 confirmed), the first in April 1917, the rest in January–September 1918. He ended the war as a 2nd Lieutenant.
After the war he flew in a civilian aviation, starting with Latecoere in 1920, flying with mail on Toulouse-Casablanca route, then flying on Bordeaux-Paris route in 1921 and on Paris-London route in Air Union airlines in 1923. From 1925 he became a test pilot in Breguet works. Then he started to perform long-distance and record breaking flights with Breguet 19 aircraft. He became, with his co-pilot, the first man to fly from Paris to New York, where they were feted with a ticker-tape welcome.

Anyone who had a heart
Hi Val,
most Brits remember Cilla Black’s version which came out just after Dionne Warwick released the original, but Cilla reached Number one in the UK and Dionne 47.
Regards Max
Val says ah, we have a record of the Dionne Warwick version but Malc said the same thing on reading the post.

and I thought he was French
Jacques Romain Georges Brel ; 8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978) was a Belgian singer-songwriter who composed and performed literate, thoughtful, and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following—initially in Belgium and France, later throughout the world. He was widely considered a master of the modern chanson. Although he recorded most of his songs in French and occasionally in Dutch, he became a major influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers such as David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Leonard Cohen, Marc Almond
Val says can you remember that haunting melody " ne me quitte pas"
Good one for a funeral, that would have the mourners in tears. After someone saying at a funeral the deceased had requested for when the coffin exited " Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye" by Gracie Fields I keep thinking of other relevant songs.

Do we love them more than the French, these avenues of trees?
Napoleon ordered the avenues of plane trees along the roads of France to give shade to his soldiers marching the routes. Now all these years later we all love them and find them such a typical French thing. The Depeche says we Anglo Saxons have baptised them " french style avenues"
Now not are they only threatened with disease but they are said to cause ' des dangers mortels" by drivers crashing in to them and being killed. Bernard Cazeneuve the minister of the interior has demanded a study to look at hazardous infrastructures and this will include trees.
A save our trees campaign might be needed, or I suppose it should be "save the trees" as they are not strictly ours.

Tour de (mis)Fortune
The cycling calendar's first big race, the Tour de Flanders took place yesterday with more than its fair share of incidents and accidents. Early in the race a New Zealand rider was knocked from his bike by an overtaking team car and suffered a broken collar bone. "He was unable to continue". Then French favourite Sylvain Chavanel was thrown to the ground when his team director's car alongside him was crashed into by a following vehicle. "He was surprised but unhurt".
60 kilometers from the finishing line the riders were passing under one of the inflatable bridges used to mark various points in the race when it started to deflate. "They had just enough room to get under".
Final mishap: on the podium to present the winner, Alexander Kristoff, with his prize, a bottle of champagne exploded. "His son was frightened by the noise".
