Toulouse has the most "radars feu rouge" in France, 15 in total. The radars on lights are a good idea in my opinion and in 2014 there were 10, 922 motorists flashed for jumping the red light at Matabiau. This amazes me as traffic lights are certainly one traffic procedure I thought everyone upheld. Watch out if you do it, 135 euros is not to be sniffed at.
Here in our country area we are trying to think where we could see a traffic light?

Pierre Soulages honoured
What have journalist Ann Sinclair and painter Pierre Soulages have in common? They are both among the people named in the Easter list of new members of the Légion d'Honneur, France's system of recognising merit.
Inaugurated by Napoleon in 1802 there are currently about 92000 members in four grades. Ann Sinclair is the editor of the French version of the Huffington Post, an on-line newspaper, and sadly famous as the ex-wife of DSK (therefore deserving of all honours and sympathy). Pierre Soulages is the 95 year old painter whose work can be seen in the eponymous museum/gallery in Rodez. He was raised to the "grand'croix" , the highest grade.

Bumble bee, was it a Queen?

I think you were probably right. Most bumble bees at this time of year are queens having emerged from hibernation, feeding on nectar and pollen and looking round for a nest site. The workers take over later but are smaller and lighter coloured.

Anyone who had a heart
A man who in August became the second person in France to receive a new-generation artificial heart said in an interview Sunday he had recovered and could go on bike rides. It’s good news for heart patients in need of transplants.

Donation to Poorpaws
Thank you Val,
as always, too kind. My address is Sue Glibbery, Combel Douzou, 46800 St. Pantaleon. If people want to donate to dog rescue, cheques (however small) should be made out to either Clinique Veterinaire de Prayssac or to Croc Services (our dog food supplier). As Poorpaws is not a registered charity no money can go into my personal bank account. If the donation is for cancer research the cheque (again, however small) should be made out to Patricia Lockett who, when all the money is collected will make the payment to Institut Claudious Regaud by on line banking.
Enjoy the sunshine, it’s a tad warmer here now and we have all just had a Book Sale post mortem in the sunshine at the Cafe du Centre in Montcuq. Alcohol was taken, well it was lunchtime and Easter !

Blackthorn hedging at Mas del Sol, in French it is called "prunille" and how pretty it looked this morning in the sun. Malc went one better than me and caught in his camera this large bee taking the nectar. I thought it must be a Queen till Malc reminded me that the Queen would be in the hive being fed by the workers.

Well done for Poorpaws and Cancer Research
Good Easter Morning Val,
Lovely to see the sun but brrrr it’s mighty chilly this side of the border !
Would you kindly, on behalf of Poorpaws, thank everyone who participated, contributed, donated and, most importantly spent money (!) in order to make our Easter Barn Book Sale our Very Best Ever ! We made over 1,550 euros which will be split 50/50 between dog rescue which is always dear to our hearts and cancer research which is especially dear to our hearts at the moment.
I fear that not all those who came are on our mailing list so am anxious to thank everyone.
The dog rescue half will pay off Poorpaws vet bill (if you see the vets from Prayssac dancing in the street you will know why !), pay for a fantastic new Ritz/Savoy double kennel which is being made for us at cost price to accommodate two very elderly dogs who have never been separated, leave some to pay for dog food for the next couple of months AND make a small donation to Twilight. So on behalf of them all THANK YOU !

Coming to Mas del Sol, Cavalleria Rusticana
Wednesday 15th of April we welcome Placido Domingo to sing his heart out at Mas del Sol. As always you arrive just before 6 pm for apero dinatoire. We have a couple of seats still available for this our last opera of the season.
What a great season it has been, thanks to all who have come and supported our efforts to enjoy ourselves and at the same time raising money for street children of Mali. This year we have not had one DVD which got stuck or even any minor disasters, my mince pies at Christmas were a bit sticky but that was the only sticky moment all season.

Easter - holiday or Holy day?
Just listening to a debate on UK TV on whether the Easter holidays should be linked to the actual church festival or fixed to make things easier for business and holidaymakers, we were reminded that here in our laique country the break is actually called the "Spring holiday" and is fixed to the last 2/3 weeks of April, depending on which educational zone you are in (called "academies"). Most of our children here in Zone A, which includes the Bordeaux academy, start their holidays on 11th April, though they will have tomorrow, Easter Monday, off school as a jour férié .
Bowing to pressure from the tourist industry, especially mountain ski resorts, the government has decided to make the Spring holiday a week earlier for the next three years. And the Academies have been re-drawn to align them with the new regions. So our local schools are now attached to Zone C, which includes Toulouse academy.
To maintain the six week gap between holidays, the Winter holiday will also be pushed back a week in February. The ski industry has welcomed the changes. Nothing has been heard from parents or teachers.

A packed cinema for "The theory of everything"
Now we know why Eddie Redmayne won the Oscar for best actor, having last night viewed the film "The Theory of Everything" along with a cinema full of local friends in the Querlys. What a touching production of the book written by Stephen Hawking's wife about her marriage and relationship with the famous physicist Stephen Hawking. At times unbearably sad, touching and funny and at other times uplifting, seeing the man's indomitable spirit.
Great film and once again many many thanks to the Queryls and Yannick and Lillian, we are so lucky to have you.

Varen church tonight
Hi Val
You locals probably know already, but there's a traditional Easter vigil in the church at Varen tonight, and Geof Cryer has recruited some of his best singers to join in. Karen and Mia are part of it. They're due to sing now and again between 9pm and midnight, as the vigil progresses. From what I've heard being rehearsed around the house yesterday and today, it's going to sound beautiful.

A pilot error caused the crash
Do you remember this story last year? A Chinese billionaire,président of the group Brilliant bought a wine growing chateau in the Gironde ( French wine is going well in China and many of the finest vineyards have now been bought by the Chinese) This poor family were torn apart when Father and son went up in a helicopter to view the estate and soon after take off crashed killing all in the copter. His wife is now in control of the chateau and vineyard. Coming up in the courts just now, the accident was found to be due to pilot error and the fact the pilot had taken a drink or two was taken in to consideration.
The vineyard was the prestigious domaine viticole Château La Rivière.

Straw hats from Caussade and Septfonds
Hat making arrived in Caussade and Septfonds in the 19th century. La Chapellerie had and has a dynamism all of its own, with a reputation for quality and style in straw hats. Pétronille Cantecor born in Septfonds in 1770 was married to an agriculteur in the town and had the idea to make straw hats. With the help of all her friends the "palhola" ( paillole) straw hat was born and in 1796 the Chapellerie was created.
Grandchild Fortuné Cante carried on the tradition and brought in new machines using gas pressure to shape the hats.
Each year in July there is a Festival of hats at Caussade to celebrate Pétronille Cantecor and the hats of those two adjoining towns.
Val says I can never see a straw hat without laughing. Our funniest family story was about my Dads straw hat, bought from Dunns at great expense by my mother. We were on a family holiday with my parents in Bruges and all the week Mum kept nagging us to be careful with Dads hat. Mind we did not sit on it in the car, watch where it was put, wear it correctly Dad... on and on. It became a joke. We then towards the end of the holiday walked along the banks of one of the canals. A stiff breeze whipped the straw hat of Dads head and off it floated into the canal. There was a stunned silence from us all as it gracefully floated down stream. None of us dare laugh at the time as poor Dad and Mums faces were pictures but we have rolled about laughing ever since, and it is now a family joke.

Yesterday morning I had just parked and this Heron landed right behind the car. So armed with my camera and using a tree for some cover I stood and watched to see what would happen. A Short time passed and then, with a quick jab something was caught, possibly a frog or even a small bird it is hard to tell. After its breakfast it waded into the water for an after meal drink and then flew off, I hope it does not get indigestion flying so soon after eating.

Saving the Dandelions!!!!!Doreen and Val you are brilliant. Fantastic to see that people are realizing that in their own way they can help the bees.
However, we should all carry on helping our wildlife in our gardens and save those dandelions!

Septfonds internment camp
70 years ago the infamous internment camp at Septfonds was closed down. Opened in 1939 to intern refugees from the Franco regime during the Spanish civil war, it was also used to house Jews arrested under the German occupation. In a reference to the Lexos station debate here on reader suggests that it was far more likely that the Jewish prisoners were loaded onto trains at Caussade, rather than Lexos, given its proximity to Septfonds and the main line to the north.
There are many families of Spanish descent in the area whose families were among the internees at Septfonds and there is a Facebook page dedicated to its history. Do click the link it is interesting.

Radio silence
Those readers who habitually listen to France Radios (France Info for news, France Inter for popular features, France Culture for serious discussion and France Musique for classical music and jazz) cannot have failed to notice frequent announcements that programmes are not being presented in their "integralité" due to a grevè (strike) by various broadcasting unions.
This is not too unusual, but this strike has now lasted over two weeks following the appointment of a new director for France Radios. Mathieu Gallet was tasked with reducing costs at the stations and improving the programmes. He has proposed job cuts of about 300 more senior posts and programme changes (nothing as radical as axing "The Archers" would be). The on-air effects are wall to wall music interspersed with news bulletins and some scheduled broadcasts. Some may think that this independent radio style programming is fine, but how we would miss our Radio 4 and Radio 3 and these are the type of programmes being damaged by the strike.

Hard to believe
A little girl of 30 months has died in Toulouse, killed by the people who should have loved and cared for her. She died in hospital after being discovered at home with numerous burns, old injuries and new blows, malnourished and cold. She was eventually killed by a blow to the head.
Malc and I worry about dogs being maltreated but how unbelievable that anyone could treat a small vulnerable child like this.
The parents have been arrested.

Look out for Debbie and Sarah
Hi Val,
I enjoyed the article about Caylus market the other week. It is a lovely little market - tiny compared to St Antonin, but with an intimate feel, and local producteurs who can talk to you knowledeably about their produce. It has been quiet over the winter. I went to a meeting at the Mairie to discuss how we can make the markets better all year round (Caylus has 2 markets: Saturday at the lavoir, Tuesday at the Placede la Mairie) and it was nice to see my marche amies after my winter break! There's a great sense of community amongst the market stallholders and I do feel a little guilty for having taken the winter off while other stallholders have carried on regardless.
However, I will be back there tomorrow, with our regular stall, as will Sarah from Domaine du Merchien. If anyone's looking for a nice bottle of wine for their special EasterSunday dinner, then Sarah's the one to talk to!
Of course, chocolate is the essential easter present, but if anyone's thinking of giving a little extra something, plants make a lovely, enduring gift. I'll have a range of alpines and perennials from our nursery, including half a dozen different varieties of thyme, great for adding interest to your herb garden, and for plant enthusiasts who like something a bit different, we have some rare and rarely offered plants, including some nice Arabis, Soldanellas and Primulas.

Et comme je n'avais avec moi ni mécanicien ni passagers, jeme préparai à essayer de rèussir, tout seul,une réparation difficile.
So ilived alone without anyone I could really talk to, until a breakdown in the Sahara desert, six years ago. Something had broken in my engine. And as I had with me neither a mechanic nor any passengers, I readied myself to try and carry out, all alone, the difficult repairs.

This pool cover or abri, by Abrisud, covers a 12 metre by 6 metre pool at the moment but would obviously cover smaller sizes too.
It is comprised of seven alloy and polycarbonate panels each approx two metres by seven which link together, plus end panel. This pool cover or abri, by Abrisud, covers a 12 metre by 6 metre pool at the moment but would obviously cover smaller sizes too.
It is comprised of seven alloy and polycarbonate panels each approx two metres by seven which link together, plus end panel. Careering down the banks with no steering
First afternoon on my sit on motor mower. Malc happily gone off to play boules at the summer venue in Verfeil. I was happily singing as I mowed, then got on to the bank down the field to discover as I tried to turn I had no steering. The donkey fence was looming ever closer as I suddenly had the presence of mind to slam my foot on the brake. A very dodgy moment, most annoying as the machine has just had a very expensive service ( after the last debacle in the autumn) The dashed thing is stuck out in the field and I have no idea how we will get it back.

I've been testing some recipes and came up with this fantastic recipe for
gluten free chocolate cake which is now going to be my signature gluten free
recipe but I'm happy to share it.

120g dark chocolate
3 beaten eggs
150g caster sugar
40g cocoa powder
80g ground almonds
1 teaspoon vanilla
Grease and line a 7” cake tin or it will make 7 large cupcakes
Melt chocolate and butter slowly in a saucepan and leave to cool slightly –
you can help this process by tipping the contents into a bowl
Now you can turn the oven on – 150 °
When your oven has reached the required temperature add all the other
ingredients to the melted chocolate and pour into tin or cupcake cases.
Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes – these cakes are super moist so a
toothpick won’t necessarily come out clean. They should be well risen and

Getting rid of moles painlessly
Hello Val,
I see you have moles in your garden. I have tried a few things myself over the years and these tend to work.... at little or not cost:-
1) find a freshly dug mole hill, open it up slightly with the end of an old broomhandle, deposit fresh dog poo in to the hole and cover it up.
2) purchase handheld windmills and 'plant' one in every mole hill that appears. Place the windmill facing the wind. Only works if you have a windy garden or on windy days.
3) Dig down in a freshly dug molehill, the depth of a plastic bottle. Take the lid off the plastic bottle and place the bottle in the hole. The tricky part is to ensure the top is level to the ground and nothing around it obstructs the wind from blowing over the top. If it is down correctly, the moles will scatter elsewhere. Same principle as a person blowing over the top of a bottle. Moles hate it!

Lourdes re-opens
The grotto was flooded in 2013 and has been closed for flood defence works for the last four months. The works completed yesterday meaning that pilgrims can once more enter the grotto and hope for a cure to their illnesses.

As we predicted a few days ago, the era of the Baylet family ruling Tarn and Garonne has ended. For 45 years Jean Michel Baylet, preceded by his mother Evelyne, have been president of the Conseil General but this ended this week with the election of Christian Astruc, the maire of Dunes.
M Baylet, chairman of the Depeche du Midi group, did not stand for re-election to the presidency in the face of a "tout sauf Baylet" campaign.

Bees love dandelions, its official
Our controversial cultivated dandelion beds have now got the thumbs up from Malc. Going to play bridge last night his bridge partner former " Master bee keeper" in the UK now living here in Tagland assures Malc that bees love dandelions. Malc reveres his bridge partner and as they had a win last night, his partner is more glorified than usual. A good night for the cards and a good outcome for the bees.

Gluten free chocolate cup cakes

I've been testing some recipes and came up with this fantastic recipe for
gluten free chocolate cake which is now going to be my signature gluten free
recipe but I'm happy to share it.

Making a bamboo trellis in 2 days.
Rainy days have meant little progress in my garden. While waiting for the sun to reappear, I thought I would turn my hands to making a bamboo trellis to support the old grape vine and also to perk up the entrance into the garden.
Never having done one before, I found a great website, www.japangarden.co.uk, that showed me how, along with making a proper square knot. After sourcing some free, local bamboo, I spent two days in the garden with a handsaw, measuring tape, string, scissors and a thermos of coffee to keep me going.
Three things I found really useful was to soak the string (if it is made of natural fibres) in water. It shrinks and tightens when it dries. The second was using the top of my pallet compost bin which was the perfect height for sawing lengths of bamboo. The third was raising off the ground the bottoms of the vertical bamboos by sinking a sturdy post into the ground and then tying the bamboo to that. Also, by making cuts just above each growth point meant that the natural membrane will keep water out.
I made both of the sides before securing them in place and then, once secured, measured and made the roof in situ. Then the poor old vine was gently manoeuvred over the roof and tied in.
Thinking sweet peas might look lovely climbing amongst the grape leaves. I love gardens that have flowers scattered amongst the veg. The best of both worlds!
My next project is erecting bamboo bean and pea supports. With good weather forecast starting on Sunday, I am so looking forward to planting at last!

I will not let Malc kill the moles although Bonny does her fair share of digging and killing. The sonic stick Malc bought does work but only by moving the moles to another area. If one invested in enough it would probably do the trick but at 16 euros each one Malc is not prepared to go further.
Now we have molehills and dandelions everywhere and I, being on a save the bees mission have suggested we leave the dandelions. Met with shock horror this idea.
So a compromise has been made and I have started mowing the lawns and digging out dandelions in all but a designated area, leaving a square patch of badly dandelion affected terrain for our friends the bees. It does actually look quite bright and pretty but I can see the seeds floating out of bounds.

Hatching caterpillars

Part of our garden is left to wild things and wandering around the other day I saw what looked like cobwebs across the plants. This sheet of web was really low to the ground and was about 75mm across and probably extended to 300mm in length. Yesterday the mysterious web hatched into loads of tiny caterpillars Oh dear "processionary caterpillars" I thought, but hang on they nest in trees and they are usually larger than my specimens.
After researching several butterfly and caterpillar identification sites, I believe I have discovered that these caterpillars are in fact Black-veined White (Aporia crataegi). These butterflies are quite common in Europe and are quite partial to Blackthorn and Hawthorn plants of which we have many. I have also added an old photo of a pair of Black-veined White butterflies for reference.

Rather a splendid Chateau Foix
The Château de Foix is a castle in the French département of Ariège. An important tourist site, it dominates the town of Foixit and was once a Cathar Castle. It is listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
In the 12th and 13th centuries the castle had only 2 square towers; the round tower was only added in the 15th century.
It was the home of the celebrated family of counts who became the viscount of Béarn, then kings of Navarre and kings of France..
In 1002 the castle figured in the testament of Roger the first count of Carcassonne who bequeathed it to his eldest son Bernard. Bernard Roger is the first to use the title Comte de Foix. The castle was the count's maion residence until 1290.

Always sad when family leave
Malc is taking our daughter and the two girls back to Toulouse for their flight back to the UK. It is horrible the sadness one feels on saying goodbye. We are the lucky ones in at least the family can come and spend special days in France. Both girls are learning French and as the weather was so miserable we bought a French monopoly set. The counting of the money is in euros, the streets and railways are the streets of Paris. The question cards are in French, some very funny pronunciation went on, sadly mainly from me.
Another good visit over, we now look forward to the next in the summer.

Les ‘respountchous’ is the Occitan ( patois) spelling of ‘responchons ‘ (that are actually pronounced ‘respounchous’!)
An elderly neighbour says that the responchon is the ‘l’herbe aux femmes battues’ – beaten wives grass!!
Tanous is another Occitan word with a variety of spellings and they are the spring shoots on brassicas like brussel sprouts or cabbage.
Cordes has an annual Fete de Responchons in April but as far as I know there is not a Fete de Tanous;

Would you dare comment?
As Parisians continue to ignore laws that ban smoking inside closed off cafe terraces, the Town Hall has sent a reminder to police that they shouldn't hesitate to crack down on both the smokers and the cafe owners not abiding by the rules. Val says the Local tells us this, but it is not just in Paris this happens. In many local bars smoking carries on as normal inside the bar and on the terraces. We have found with young family here on miserable wet days we thought twice about going in to local smoke filled bars. Has anyone dared to say to a bar owner, this is supposed to be a smoke free zone? Personally I do not mind so much on terraces.
Avalanche in the Alps
At least three people were killed on Wednesday when a huge avalanche hit the Alpine Ecrins National Park in south eastern France. Another person was left in a critical condition.

Yesterday after shopping in Villefranche, we went to L'Univers restaurant by the river.
We thought the menu of the day was very interesting starting with tanous, which we have no idea what it was, responchous which we know what it is, but they spelt it incorrectly and pissenlits which are pee the beds/ dandelions.
The beef forgotten in the oven also interesting, well we had to try it didn't we.
All very good and overall we gave it 4 out of 5 in our TOF report.

Magnificent magnolia
Dear Val and Malc,
I spotted this splendid Magnolia tree next to the Salle des Thermes in St Antonin and could not resist a shot. I set up my camera and tripod to the background of a French lady chatting away on her 'phone, when she had finished she came over and asked if I was professional, no I replied this is a hobby. Through our conversation I learned she was a keen photographer but sadly she had all her camera equipment stolen, but she did brighten up when we discovered that we lived in neighbouring villages.

Does any reader know about this story that I found in a local newsletter? KJ
Following a number of regrettable incidents in which dogs have been injured during games of pétanque, Article 153 of the Treaty on the Function of the European Union (ex Article 137 TEC) that deals with Health and Safety, has been invoked to apply more stringent rules during the operation of pétanque matches. In the most recent incident, a stray hound was hit on the head in Montpelier. The resultant fracas led to several injuries among players and a potential public order situation. The oldest victim, an 86-year-old retired gardener, sustained non-life threatening abrasions to his left ankle and has now been discharged from hospital. Similar incidents have occurred in recent months in Chinon and Pau. The latter involved a pedigree Shih Tzu named Georges whose fur had to be completely shaved off as a result of his injuries.
The new legislation means that during all matches in public places, the Tireur
(shooter) must wear a fluorescent jacket emblazoned with the letter T at all times. He or she must also cry “Tire!” before putting their boule into play (rather like “Fore!” in golf). Dog owners are advised to train their pets to take cover whenever they hear the cry of “Tire!”.
Failure to comply with the new rules could result in a fine of €25 levied on each member of the offending team(s) and indefinite confiscation of their boules.

School league tables
Ressortissants of the UK will be familiar with schools being classed according to league tables based on exam results and today the classification of the lycées (sixth form colleges) according to their results in the baccalauréat examinations has been published.
Of over 2000 schools in the "general and technology" table the Lycée St Cecile in Albi was placed 65th and in the professional classification the Lycée St Joseph in Villefranche was placed 44th. These were the top placed establishments in Midi Pyrenees. Each obtained 100% pass rate in the bac .

Forever home needed
Found wandering the back streets of St. Antonin in a very sad state. Hungry, dirty and thirsty. Local resident called TAG and asked if we could collect and find her a foster home. She is a little darling, house trained and loves a cuddle on your knee. A large house needed with fenced garden, Ellie loves bananas but will happily eat dog biscuits, having eaten a bag of Bonny's in the first half hour here.
