A Nordica wood burning stove for sale

A Nordica wood burning stove for sale with flue pipe which was used with it, used to have it in our office where it worked so well. Have decided to sell as we will probably never use it again, but it is a shame as I like its size and colour.

40 euros to caring home, although as it is in the grange at the moment,it is not really being cared for.

uktelecom, who's that?

Why put them in bags at the decheterie?

Two dogs in the Gers, route d'Agen in the Auch were found tied in bags pushed under the gates at a decheterie. One dog 2 months old and the other a small fox terrier / teckel ( a dachshund is a teckel )They are both being cared for at the SPA du Gers if any one is interested in adopting.

It's the thought that counts, says Doreen

It’s the thought that counts. Despite me never having shown the least interest in, or aptitude for, embroidery Susan brought me four cross stitch kits to help me while away my time in hospital. Luckily, I quickly managed to offload one onto Kathy,

who accepted it with a commendable show of enthusiasm.

I started on one of the others. The kit, the packet claimed, contained Frame, Floss, Fabric, Needle and Chart. Some instructions might have been useful, but I was merely told: “When embroidering with anchor stranded cotton use 2 strands = 1/3 yarn”.

 Six stitches into the pattern and I’m none the wiser.

 So what do you bring someone in hospital? Linda has lent me a calendar with photos of Rupert on it. It does cheer me up, but everyone — visitors, nurses, doctors or lost patients — gravitate to it and tell me in a variety of languages what a handsome dog he is. “Oh, and by the way, how are you?” they add.

Glynis sourced a dongle for me, which means I can read emails, go on Facebook, watch The Apprentice and catch up with TAGlines. In my dongle-less days, David fixed up a phone for me that enabled me to access my emails. It was marvellous, even if it did regularly bellow at me to “turn right at the next junction”.

I have become a collecting point for the exchange of goods between various visitors. I’m slightly concerned about the box of fertilised eggs currently residing in a cupboard in case they hatch prematurely and cause mayhem on the first floor of the Pont de Chaumes.

 Seriously, though, thanks to everyone who has visited, sent cards or given practical help, particularly Judith and Martyn who have been taking care of the cats.

Varenly Regatta celebrates its 10th year, date for your diary

Val says, It is wonderful when people are booking their holidays to coincide with Varenly Regatta and bear in mind everyone is invited and anybody can have a go racing [ I say racing in the loosest possible sense ]
Well for those who may be interested the date will be Wednesday August 21st and this will be the 10th Varenly Regatta.
How did it all start  I hear newcomers ask.? Well it was coming up to Malcs 60th,  ten years ago and I was trying to think of some way to mark it  that included all our friends. As we had always been ''on the water ''in some way all our lives the idea of arranging a Regatta seemed like a fun idea. We had bought some canoes along with friends , all the same handicap and  guess who had been Sailing Secretary at our Civil Service Sailing Club for many years , you guessed it, Malc. Nick Lynes had also been a very keen sailor all his life and so with Malc as ''Acting Commodore'' and Nick as Deputy, doing all the hard work the day was arranged.
Varen was chosen as it has a lovely camping ground for a picnic and a clear stretch of safe water.As we had just recently moved from Henley on Thames calling the Regatta, Varenly seemed a good idea.
Gosh, what fun we have had in those ten years. Everyone has their own memories of truimphs and failures, rescues, on and offshore dramas. Now there is a choice of having a picnic and lets be honest some do it in more style than others. The Clenches would always win the prize for style in table decoration [ and probably everything else] The last two years the Moulin has opened for special lunch time meals and last year we enjoyed fish and chips after all the hard work and fun. 
For us this year it  will be special as our nephews '' the Barraclough Boys ''will be here on holiday and so able to take part. Four lads age 7 to 15 years  who I know will take the competition seriously. Sadly our grandchildren come in July so will miss it.  Malc will be celebrating his 70th  and hoping he will still be Commodore at 80... and why not.?

Charity barbecue for Via Sahel Enfants d' Afrique

The charity barbecue is arranged for Monday 27th of May being held at Mas del Sol, starting at 7.30pm. We have had a really generous offer by a reader to make 18 desserts and another to make salads so all the proceeds from the evening can go to the charity. Cheques can be given to us and sent at anytime now made payable for the full amount to " Via Sahel Enfants d' Afrique"
The cost is 20 euros each person and you will be supplying your own bottle of wine. We are hoping to be  seated in the grange but if chilly we will move indoors.

Trouble with your box hedge or ornamental box?

Anyone with ornamental specimens or hedges of box may have noticed areas of greying leaves  and what appears to be spider webbing. The chances are that they are infected with  box tree caterpillars Cydalima Perspectalis. These arrived from China a few years ago and  are creating serious havoc in Europe in particular Germany where nearly 100% of their boxes  are affected. The problem is here in France and there is evidence here at our house in St Antonin  (the two boxes outside at the front of our house) and elsewhere in the town.  Ultimately the box  plants will be completely stripped and the plants weakened such that they easily die.  Control can be achieved with Pyrethroid insecticide which can be obtained from most  garden centres and nurseries.  Regards  Tony

6 six suspected members of the Basque separatist group ETA were arrested in Blois, Brive and Montpellier. Five are on the most wanted list. ETA announced in 2011 that it was giving up its armed struggle though it has yet to formally disarm.

Drive with care on the busy holiday roads

According to the Depeche many people were caught on the regions roads with fixed speed cameras. The gendarmes were also mobilised with hand held speed cameras and we passed two gendarmes just on the road before Feneyrols on the road into St. Antonin. Drive carefully within the speed limit is the message.

Gatsby at the Querlys, book me in

Just called Gatsby seems to have lost the Great [ the book was certainly great] is on at the opening of the Film Festival at Cannes and at Le Queryls, at St. Antonin 15 to 21 st of May. Leonardo Di Caprio in the starring role. I enjoyed the last Gatsby so very much, looking forward to this version. The book in first edition format is worth a lot of money, with dustwrapper around   £60,000. We once sold it for just slightly less than that  to a customer whose partner bought it as a pressie. That is the sort of partner one could do with !

That sinking feeling has arrived

We are not sure but we think our kestrel pair have just been using us. We got to the point of signing the " compromis de vente" and then they flew away.
They are still making the odd visit but we think more to check out what they are missing. Our days of the " Mas del Sol Falconry " may be over. This is the second year, after 15 years of nesting here that they have decided against us at the last minute. Last year we put it down to the magpies chasing them  but we have no theories this year. It could be the neighbours are  too noisy ( that is us ) but we will never know . We think our days of kestrel caring are over, we feel quite sad... Hang on Malc has just seen one fly out of the hole, perhaps too soon to be disheartened, but could be just a flying visit!

President Hollande, one year on

 President Hollande, where one year in to office,  has unemployment topping 2 million, with virtually zero growth, knows measures must be taken. Hollande's key measure to get young people working will not kick in till the end of the year called " emplois d'avenir" this is where the young get job experience and initial training. Another idea is " contrats de generation" where a young person works alongside someone nearing and preparing for retirement.
With criticisms from left and right he needs to bring off something pretty spectacular to help unemployment as soon as possible.

We have slipped in to our " Fleetwood " era with out even noticing.

Oh! my, I do not wish to depress lots of our friends but I have just realised we have slipped into our "Fleetwood" era without even  realising. Fleetwood era you say "what' s that". When I was much younger and running a branch library  in Bolton,  one of my colleagues had an aunt who retired to Fleetwood, and joined all the other wrinklies who retired there. If you were rich you retired to Southport and enjoyed the good life at the coast. Nobody we knew ever retired to Blackpool, well you would not, would you? I remember laughing about the life, it seemed so far removed from the life I was living as  the windsurfing, sailing goddess, that I was at  that time.
Well now, it may be the SW of France  where we live ( times change ) but however you look at it, we are the wrinklies enjoying retirement. Who knows how long any of us have but one thing I do know is enjoy every moment, cuddle any dog, cat, donkey,husband or wife you can get your hands on ( your own preferable ) enjoy your grandchildren and enjoy your life however restricted it is by health in comparison  to previous years.
A few years earlier from our roots in the North East of England, retirees would move  to the Yorkshire dales and the Lake District

La Seye et Vous and high praise

Hi Val, Just writing to say we had a super meal at "La Seye et Vous" in Verfeil on the weekend. I had been originally put off when it first reopened a couple of years ago by a couple of less than average meals. I had heard such good things about it recently I relented and gave it a go. I am so glad I did. They have definitely found their feet. All nine of us really enjoyed a great unpretentious 3 course meal with aperitifs and gallons of house wine at just under €30 a head. Swapping in the sun

And after the hard rummage is over what nicer way to finish than a coffee in the sun. Loads of books to choose from and many really good titles not picked up, so I will save those for next time. The others I have already sorted in to possibles for Parisot Library and others for Emmaus.
The DVD swap seems to be going well and as there are now a lot of DVDs that have been donated we are doing exactly the same as the books. You take a DVD you do not mind if you never see again, donate it and bring away others to go back next time.Saves a lot of work  for Martyn, so makes sense.
The ladies from Spiced Cuisine also seemed to do a thriving trade.

Bridge for young and the more mature

The game of Bridge is going to be taught in schools. A  new agreement between the French Bridge Federation and the Minister of Education  means maths lessons could include playing bridge. The theory is bridge promotes numeracy, thinking skills and team play.
Malc is in the Caylus Bridge Group and really enjoys with his partner David all the tactics involved, keeps them out of trouble and their minds working.

Sunday is ''embarrassment day '' in St. Antonin Market

If you see Malc walking ahead or well behind me in the Market it is because he steers clear of his embarrassing wife, yes me. I have spent the last couple of years saying " oh! you speak English, do you know about TAG online " and then  stuffing a Tag online card in the surprised hand of the English speaker. Only on two occasions have I had the card roughly pushed back and once it ended up in a veritable to and fro of my card. I bet many of you reading this are smiling remembering your introduction to TAG.
Well, let me tell you today I went around and everybody except two people said " oh, no we are big TAG readers already!"   Gosh! life is going to get much easier and the general public will be able to get on with their shopping with out being pounced on .... unless there is still someone out there who is not " one of us "
We met Roger for a coffee to see how he was doing with Monty. Now if you remember Roger does not have internet access so is not meant to know he and Monty  are  this week's star story. He was surprised how many people enquired about Monty and Ginger and someone even said to us all, "following the story Roger, good luck with Monty." I thought at this point I better own up and Roger having spent his working life in newspapers appreciates the need for a good human interest story. He now may be coming up with tales of how Monty super dog saved three children from drowning in a river, but that would be a " shaggy dog tale".

Val says Thanks Maeva for the address of a kennels and cattery at Caussade. We know people do sometimes abandon their dogs for their holidays. We have had it happen near us where the dog was given lots of food for a week in its bowl outside whilst the owners went away. The dog wandered the fields round about killing cats and chickens trying to find things to eat. When the owner returned I mentioned the dog had killed one of our chickens ( Betty) he replied that next time he went away he would tie the dog up! Fortunately that never happened and he has been more responsible with his dog of late.

Fuss about Chambres d' hotes in the Gers

"L' union des metiers de let des Industries l' hotellerie" are complaining about chambres d' hotes in the region. Firstly they do not declare themselves at the Mairie, an obligation here. Guests have to be lodged within the owners house. There should be no more than 5 bedrooms and there should be no more than 15 people staying. The occupancy rate at the moment in hotels in the Gers is down to 35% . Malc thinks the lack of guests is more likely to be weather related.

Keira Knightley marries in the South of France

Keira has married her boyfriend of two years James Righton, rock star at Marzan in Provence. The reception was held in the familys estate nearby and Keira's dress was designed by Karl Lagerfeld, director of Chanel.
Nearby neighbours are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who live in a 17th century manor house.

Northern Mali , still unstable

A report in the Guardian written by Afua Hirsch highlights the problems still being faced in Mali. The fear of attacks and suicide bombings still remains and in Timbuktu there is an eerie silence in the streets, as the jihadists killed all the dogs calling  it " Operation Dog"

 Remember it is the street children of the capital Bamako, Mali we are raising money for.

You know I gave you lots of ideas for ''girly activities'' for children here on holiday. Now this will suit the boys, girls and possibly even grannies! A leisure complex which is open  from 1st of May till Sept. It is in the grounds and Park of Jacques and Martine Monmoton where they are offering all sorts of activities, many tree bound.There are lines to swing across, walking [with safety equipment] through the branches of trees and even a tree house which you could sleep in. "I only have eyes for you," woofs Monty

Had a showing last night of  that classic with Marlon Brando of " On the Waterfront" a black and white movie but one of the all time greats. Roger was invited with the now famous Monty. He was such a good boy, sitting at Rogers feet throughout looking at him adoringly. He was quite happy to be greeted by everyone but in truth had eyes only for Roger. The Ginger situation is easing as the two get to know each other separated by a glass door. I think we are going to have a happy ending.

Beware Ginger

Hello  Val!

I too am anti-smack but very pro spray . The key is anticipation. Don’t wait for an attack but closely observe body language and as soon as Ginger fixes  Monty  with a stare or tenses himself to launch then give him  a firm  NO and a quick preventive spray. If Ginger repeats his unwanted behaviour then repeat the deterrent. Don’t give up but stick it out for a couple of long days and only separate them  when you are not there.  Best to use a plant spray as Marcia recommends or even a syringe, but not an aerosol  as this could frighten Monty. Caress them both when they are  behaving as you want and do this often. It’s important.

Our old dog and new cat (an easier way round ) were sharing a basket within a week .

 also wanted to say that if i had more volunteers to help me daily muck out and handle them then i could do so much more, its very hard work on a daily basis so i am a little scared to take on any more, as at the moment i am mucking out 22 donks daily, 4 are in and out and 7 are in by day because of getting too fat and sweetitch, which tends to be a lot of poo !!  also the handling of the difficult ones who come to us later in life having not been handled enough.  then i need to work a bit too in my life as retirement isnt here yet, so anyone who wants to come by for 2 or 3 hours once a week or each fortnight would be welcome.  please get in touch.  thanks val.  jan

What a great idea the spray, watch out Ginger!

Dear Val,

In my experience, a cat will accept a new dog eventually. It might take some time though and maybe some interference by Roger?

I would suggest to spray water on her whenever she attacks Monty. Use a plant spray. Or just give her a smack; she must realise her behaviour is not acceptable. I hope Monty is not afraid of the cat because that would complicate matters. Our new dog and old cat still do not get on but have learned to accept each other.

Monty knows and has lived with cats, but never one quite like Ginger!

Roger is getting quite attached to Monty who does sound like a lovely dog. He has had two walks today off the lead and comes back when called, and in fact stays very close to Roger. Roger let him sleep in his room last night and was amazed Monty was happy on the floor ( Dibbs always jumped on the bed at some point in the night!)  All would be going really well if Ginger the cat had not taken such a positive dislike to Monty. Apparently Ginger on first meeting launched himself, back arched as a spitting, claws out trajectile at Monty. ( Never been an easy cat old Ginge!) Roger is managing by keeping them in different rooms. Have we any advice from cat or dog lovers who have had this problem? When we got Twister, our cats just tiptoed round the edges, until they were all used to each other, so what do we think. Will Ginger calm down?

Has anybody got a recipe for lettuce and basil stuffed chicken?

Planted out my lettuces, went and  got the watering can, by the time I was back the lettuces had vanished. Henny and Penny were stood next to them looking... innocent! So next I planted 3 different types of basil. We never have success with basil and it is so nice with beef tomatoes and mozzarella. Went to get the watering can, came back to discover the little demons like basil. I gave them a good talking to, how  many worms have I thrown your way etc. Malc is at the stage of wanting roast chicken already stuffed with basil.
At this point I need to cuddle a donkey.

Correct rate of exchange on tax forms?

Its that time of year again. I got my French income tax forms this week. Filling them out isn't the issue.

Figuring out the 'correct' exchange rate is always an issue. I've looked all over the internet with no success. In past years I've looked up the month end rates and divided by 12 to get the average rate. The tax authorities have always accepted that, but I'm sure there must be something official somewhere.

Do any of your readers know of where to find such a rate?

Elysee is set to sell off some bottles of vintage wine

1,200 bottles of vintage wine from the cellars of the Elysee are being sent for auction in Paris, at the Drouot auction house. All the wines are French of course and are Bordeaux or Burgundy's . The auction will take place on the 30th and 31st of May. Many of the bottles are ready to be drunk immediately and the overall sum that the wine is expected to achieve is 250,000 euros, all for the state coffers. Organisers say some bottles of Petrus 1990 may fetch 2,200 euros a bottle but there will be more modest wines on sale. Some of the buyers are expected to be affluent Chinese, who are the biggest importers of Bordeaux wines.

Ten minutes cuddling a donkey, relieves stress and tension

The fact that I am not stressed or tense could be down to my 10 minute donkey cuddle every morning. It is the most relaxing thing to hold the donkeys head, they like that, and scratch their necks or ears and being me I whisper " sweet nothings" All round is bird song and now the vast expanse of green fields and trees. I arrive back at the house practically floating on an air of " bonhomie"
Is this a "holiday in our gite " selling point, or may be all the repeat visitors we have, already have discovered this relaxing pursuit. If you have not got a donkey discover your nearest donkey sanctuary and give it a try. No pyscho analysts needed  in our "coin"

Le Muguet, a symbol of spring, friendship and love

Le Muguet given on the 1st of May, originally from Japan but now cultivated in Nantes and Bordeaux for distribution throughout France. A symbol of spring which coincides with the flower season and the first rays of sun. A good luck flower to give to a friend or lover and 13 "clochettes/ bells" in particular are prized.
In 1561 King Charles 1X visited La Drome where he was given muguet as a friendship offering. Every year after that he  decided to give the ladies of his court  a sprig of muguet, and it is said that was where  the tradition started. In 2012, 35.9 millions of muguet were sold.

Blood analysis at Caussade

The medical analysis laboratory at Caussade is moving in to new premises in the medical centre  by the station. Blood samples will still be taken there but  will be sent to Montauban and paradoxically the results should be quicker because of new technology.
In the local area 13 regional labs willbe joined in o one organisation. New hours of opening are Monday to Friday 7.30am to 12 and 14 h to 17h
