Dear Val and Malcolm,
It is that time of year when the farmers are out cutting in the fields to provide winter food for their animals. The fascinating thing is that birds know what advantages it can bring, typically you will see Buzzards or Kestrels on the fringes of the field waiting for a tasty morsel but today it was the turn of the Cattle Egret.
As the cutting equipment travelled down the field, it was followed by a flock of Egrets ready to pounce on anything thrown up by the cut grass. Here is a picture of an Egret that is flying after just catching a mouse, the Egret below hoping that it will fall from its beak. Then a picture of the mouse firmly held, and finally just the tail is left.
